Moss on roof

We have a small bungalow, with one side of the roof never getting any sun. Consequently it's covered in moss and apart from it constantly dropping on the patio we're worried about damage to the roof or water getting in.

Does anyone know how best to get it removed? Husband unable to get on roof.

There are companies that do this for a couple of hundred. I looked into it recently. The consensus is that it's important not to let them use a power washer.

Absolutely. If it was that easy I'd blast it off with the hose myself (it's very loose) but I'd be worried about water under the tiles.

I was concerned about my brother, who is a vulnerable adult due to MH issues, being door stepped by people offering to remove the moss on his roof, so I looked these people up : www.nfrc.co.uk/nfrc-news/2012/09/07/moss-on-your-roof-advice.
Seems it’s mostly a cosmetic issue and doesn’t do any harm.

Thank you so much for that link...

We had loads of moss on our roof (flats in a big converted house) which had accumulated over many years. It's not easy to access the roof through our flat so had no idea how bad it was until we had a downpour back in the summer and bucketfuls of water (literally) came through the ceiling as it couldn't drain properly. We got a legit roofing company to take a look and they sorted it straightaway. I'd get someone to take a look as it ruined our ceiling. And carpet. And my nerves!!

It won't do any harm up there on the roof, but do check your drains every so often as it can wash down after very heavy rain.

Our window cleaner clears the gutters for us once a year and there's usually a fair bit in there that has come off the roof.

TLDR: Moss on the roof is not a problem, blocked gutters can be a problem.

We got someone to spray some long term moss remover. It takes a few months to work (no I start hit) but 3 months on, it's definitely looking better than next doors. It cost me £50, plus £150 for bloke to clear and fix the gutters, and spray stuff on.

It's called "wet and forget".

We had it all over our roof when we moved in , it was forever falling off on the floor, I waited till it was red hot in summer and went up and scraped and brushed it all off . It comes off a lot easier if it’s very dry .

It’s a large flatish 15 degree roof so it’s easy to walk about on. But the downside is it collects leaves and Moss easy ☹️

Absolutely, it is a menace if it gets into the gutters. Reminds me, must get them cleared....

A roofer will take it off - stiff brush and scraper where needed. Avoid anyone that suggests pressure washing it.

We have the same issue with our roof (on both sides!). We use Wet & Forget, which you spray on and leave. You can buy it from CostCo or online. Your roofer will need to dilute it to the directions and then use a sprayer (ours used a weed sprayer) to apply it.
