I feel as though I may have to compromise just so to beat stamp duty. I have choice of putting up with a two bed terrace which also has study , amazing bathroom but a small horrid concrete tiered garden @£375k Or the 3 bed terrace renovated, fab garden though bathroom has no window! @415k.

Did you compromise in end for your home?

We compromised on character. We looked at lots of lovely old farmhouses etc and ended up buying a house built only 5 years before we moved in. It is a "one off" and not totally characterless, but not at all what I envisaged buying when we started looking. But in terms of square feet per £ it knocked spots off the old properties we saw and its light, with floors and walls that are at right angles to each other and very low running cots for quite a big house. It was a head rather than a heart purchase but I don't regret it. One of my colleagues went on to buy the 200 year old house that we were so close to buying, and over the years I have gone from viewing it as the one that got away to a lucky escape!

We are waiting to exchange on a house in a conservation area i compromised on a smaller garden and it being ugly but I’ve come to terms with I cannot afford everything I want so the planning permission is in and I will make it beautiful.

The first thing I learnt about house buying is that's it's all one big compromise.
You just get the best one you can for your budget that ticks as many boxes as possible.
My house was a fairly ugly blank canvas - but with a bit of imagination and creativity I really love my home now.
Most importantly it's full of my favourite people, animals and things.

We compromised on location, busy main road opposite industrial works, never ever ever again.

What we got for accepting the compromise is a huge Victorian semi detached 3 bed (1,200sq ft or 115sq m), that had last been sold over 30 years ago. We have renovated and updated everything and have 2 reception rooms, plus a dining room and separate kitchen, downstairs loo, 4 piece bathroom including a large double shower, as well as a huge garden for the DC. I love love love the house, but hate the location.

I can't wait to get rid of it in the new year, as planning to sell to move to a much nicer area, and a side street. I don't think I'll be able to get such a big house though.
