Sedum roof - anyone got one?

Hi,

In the process of buying a house that has a sedum roof - the whole house not just a small area! Anyone any experience with one and the maintenance of them?

I have a small on, not the whole house. Would love a bigger one, but tbh I have to do a fair bit of weeding to keep it looking good, so I imagine that would be a fair bit of work. Unless it’s really established and the weeds don’t get a look in...

Thanks. We can’t see the roof without a ladder so not sure how much weeding we will need to do from a visual perspective. How much do weeds affect performance?

Do you like the green roof? Does it provide much sound insulation?

We did, the maintenance was really boring. We weeded and replanted 3 times over 7 /8 years. Have moved now.

Next door have one on a garden building. It's no longer sedum, just weeds...

They provide heat and sounds insulation. Would be worth checking when it was built and what sort of guarantee there is on any waterproofing underneath. We're planning to build one on an extension sometime but then I'm quite keen on them.

They look brown and dead in spells of dry weather

We’ve one at work. It’s great! But... that’s because it had very regular and thorough skilled maintenance for the first couple years. You need to be on it with the weeding until the sedum is established enough to suppress weeds itself.
It also needs to be away from falling leaves (these smother the sedum and then rot down to provide enough compost to give a foothold for weeds).

We visited the house again to take a look at the roof. The sedum is well established with just a few grass weeds showing. Leaves will be a problem though.

Mine really doesn’t and spells of dry weather here last 6 months!
