Wooden shutter help!

Planning on wooden shutters in white in my front bay window, 1930's terrace and living area a touch on the dark side although having it all painted white. Will this massively decrease the light let in? Planning cafe style shutters so can have privacy and light at the same time, but worried about making a financial mistake.

I find our room is lighter since we installed shutters. Strange but true! Maybe it's because the shutters allow you to direct the light where it's needed? Also the larger the louvre, the more light.

Chumleymouse · 23/10/2020 14:54

Yep I prefer the large ones than the small ones too and they are easier to dust 👍

IWouldBeSuperb · 23/10/2020 14:56

Ooh, where are you getting them from @justoffshift ?

I've been looking for some nice ones, but cant decide between getting them fitted or DIY.....

Loved mine, sadly left them in the last house.

I got them from Shutterly Fabulous and they were great. Also thought about DIYing it (pretty handy! Smile) but am glad I didn’t actually - was a bit of a wonky Victorian room and their installation was SO neat, way better than I could have done.

I love mine & also have large louvres. They allow more light & there are less slits when you want less light if that makes sense. I have cafe style so generally open the top bit. No handle either.

Do you know if dunelm are a lot cheaper? I've wanted shutters fitted but always thought they were out of budget but just seen dunelm do them and wondered if they were quite reasonable?

DUNELM were saying a grand !! That was painted MDF.

Jesus!! For one window?!

itsovernowthen · 25/10/2020 22:20

Ours let in loads of light, but then our windows are huge. I look at them as an investment, as this window was £1,200. We used Clement Browne, who were excellent, and I'd highly recommend them.

Plus ours are bespoke wooden shutters, which will make a difference.

I have café shutters in my bay window and I love them, perfect for privacy without losing light. It's quite a light room but really haven't noticed it being any darker with the cafe shutters. I paid £620 which was pretty average from a few quotes I had - all local suppliers.

justoffshift · 26/10/2020 08:50

That bay is very similar to mine, I really like the look of it, especially the privacy aspect.
The prices are horrendous agreed!!

Sorry to sound dim but what does "cafe shutters" mean please?

FakeFlamingo · 26/10/2020 09:25

I think the light aspect depends on the direction of your window. If south facing it will make no difference. I have mine in a north facing room and it does reduce the light a bit. We knew this before we started though & still wanted shutters as no other option worked for privacy and light as it is a road facing room. Planning to repaint the room to a lighter tone to get a lighter look. Overall the look & functionality of shutters is a win over the loss of light if any.

Ours is Clement Browne too. It cost £1600 for a massive bay window few years ago.

justoffshift · 26/10/2020 09:33

I'm not sure what ours faces but I do know that we are by a road and have nosy neighbours. I just love the look of them.
Cafe shutters are where you can open the top half independently, and leave the lower part shut for privacy.

It may sound like a stupid question but are shutters screwed to the acrual window frames or just outside of them?
