Marple area in Stockport

Does anyone know what Marple is like in the Stockport area (Greater Manchester)?

We have seen some houses for sale, but we are not sure if there are any 'dodgy' areas to avoid.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Thank you.

I can thoroughly recommend Marple having lived there for the last 17 years. The restaurants and pubs are great. There aren't any really awful areas however the better areas are around Station Road and particularly Winnington Road.

Marple is lovely and definitely a popular choice! Just bare in mind the roads are pretty much gridlocked at rush hour which is a massive pain if you need to commute by car.

Thank you both for your replies. I love that the canal is nearby too, it would be great for walks

It's quite lovely, nice community feel, decent schools, easy access to the countryside. If you want to be near the station then you'll pay a premium for it and be aware that in "normal" times the peak time trains can be packed to the rafters, if they even turn up!

Does anyone know what the area near Hawk Green/Goyt Mill is like?

The area around The Green is very pleasant and The Crown is a nice pub however I personally prefer the area on the other side of Stockport Road as nearer the shops, restaurants, stations and Marple Bridge. The property prices do also reflect that!

I second Marple Bridge - it's really lovely, but yes, property is more expensive.

Thanks everyone Smile that makes me feel much more confident.
Does anyone know if there are any baby classes/activities around that area?

My children are much older however there always used to be but not sure how they are currently affected. The Leisure Centre in Romiley is still open and used to do splash classes etc.

I used to live near Marple Bridge and there was lots to do for the children. It's a lovely area. Lovely countryside, nice pubs and restaurants, a really good park with something for everyone.

I'm a bit late but I grew up near Marple Bridge and went to college in Marple. It's a great area for families but I would also say Marple Bridge is nicer and has the best pubs and places to eat. I think the schools in the area area are still good and it is a friendly place. Feel free to PM me if you want any specifics.

Marple is beautiful, last year we were buying a farm cottage on the Ridge but sadly we were messed about by owner and gazumped (still a bit heartbroken) 🙈😂

Although Marple Bridge is lovely and is the obvious choice for prime location, just be aware that the Bridge area was affected by the flooding we've had over the last 2 years, so look carefully at flood risks for specific houses you're interested in and ask questions about any flooding history.

I grew up around this area. It is lovely in many ways - lots of countryside nearby, nice little village centre and pretty good schools. I would add a note of caution - if you are intending to commute from here to Stockport or Manchester, please triple the amount of time that you think it will take. I've known so many people that seem to think it will be an easy 15 minute commute and it can take over an hour, as there are very limited roads in and out, which are often being dug up (hilly terrain).

Downside of Hawk Green, from POV of teenager there, is relative lack of nearby entertainment and limited public transport. It is also fairly unmixed ethnically, which might be a factor for some.

Dodgy parts - some people might find the old council estate area less appealing, not least because it is very hilly and lacking in play areas and other facilities. It's usually easy to tell from the houses themselves which these are. Post a link if you've specific houses in mind.

Sorry I missed some of the later replies. I've been looking at the area near to Goyt Mill. I can tell there are quite a few council/ex council houses. This won't bother me if the area is safe. Does anyone know if the area is okay? Thank you

It isn't the best area of Marple however, in my opinion, there aren't any unsafe areas. I wouldn't worry about walking around Marple at night other than falling into the canals!!

Thank you for the reply
