Mortgage deeds

To make structural changes to the property we are buying we apparently must get permission from our mortgage company. Does anyone follow this rule? We are going through our mortgage offer from Nationwide and it is in the terms and conditions. It is standard. Is this new or has it always been that way. I have bought other properties in the past and renewed mortgages before. I never ever noticed this until today.

DS has a mortgage with NW too, he needed a new roof and had to borrow the money from NW. they wanted to know if the money was for structural changes or not, and I think they came to see the house before they lent the money. But he didn’t tell them about the new windows or doors he had put in, in advance. They probably weren’t structural though.

Makes sense, putting an extension or new roof on a house they may own more of than you could be a risk and they’re entitled to know about it.

I’ve seen the term “ new roof “ on here quite a lot, do people mean a complete new roof ( timber, tiles fascias the whole structure ). Or do they mean roof covering ( tiles, membrane, lead ) ?

Sorry if it’s off thread 🙂
