Budget for a small kitchen IKEA or Howdens

Hi my PIL are in the process of downsizing to a bungalow and I am trying to persuade them to at least consider a new kitchen - the existing one is a bit shabby and has an odd layout.
Can anyone give me a really rough idea of what they might need to spend ? Without white goods or flooring as this is being budgeted for separately.

It needs to de decent but not high end.

Would 5K do it ?

TIA

Not in the UK but we purchased our kitchen of family home in IKEA perhaps 12 years ago for a lot less than £5k so I'd imagine it's possible now.

Have a look at DIY Kitchens online. You can buy individual cupboards etc. Think £5k easily enough.

Midlifemission · 21/10/2020 16:48

Thanks for quick replies that's reassuring ! I think my sister did a kitchen some years ago for about 3 K but I don't want to over promise on price if they do go for it .
I think we may need a planning service too - anyone got any recent recommendations out of the mainstream options ?
b&Q / magnet / wickes / IKEA ?

I use to work for Howdens and depending on the size of the kitchen and what they would want you could possibly get a decent kitchen for £5K.
They have the October sale on now but they are trade only so you would either need your builder/carpenter to be able to get prices or if your in the trades business you can get prices.

If you can use the old carcasses, that will save you £££. We have considered getting an ikea kitchen and paying a professional carpenter to install. Still worked out cheaper than getting a company to do it.

I got my modestly sized kitchen from b &q for £2.6k last year. 3 wall units 8 base units incl sink and worktop. It's not brilliant quality, but smart and functional.

Oranges555 · 21/10/2020 18:02

Our current kitchen is B&Q. Very impressed for the price (2.5K) had it for over a year and still looks perfect

Johntaylorschin · 21/10/2020 18:13

My son”s kitchen is tiny, just purchased from Ikea, maybe 4 base cupboards and 4 wall cupboards, integrated slimline dishwasher, sink, taps and worktop for 2.2K

We have just done a fairly big kitchen with Ikea and it was under £5k including fitting.

However make sure you budget for all the other things, we have had to sort (and pay for separately)

Plastering of room before kitchen (it was floor to ceiling tiled before)
Plumber to fit sink (Ikea won’t do this)
Electrician to sort wires for cooker/extraction fan (but you might not need this if you age not changing locations)

Plus there is then decorating (paint is way more expensive than I thought it was) plus flooring.

It’s adding up to way more than we originally thought.

Mine is coming next week from
Wren. Have you tried there? They are well priced when there is a sale on.

DannyGlickWindowTapping · 21/10/2020 18:53

I've just had a Wren kitchen fitted, but had the units delivered made. This was more than £5k. I think if you're going for flat pack, there are cheaper options at equal quality. If you go for IKEA, I've heard that their fitting service may be better, as they don't have the utility void that most manufacturers have, and fitters are used to. Also heard that quality is pretty good, with lots of clever space-saving design features. Couldn't have it in my very wonky space as I have no straight lines / right angles, but it would have been my choice otherwise

Midlifemission · 21/10/2020 20:41

Thanks everyone for the input it’s all really
Helpful.
Spoke to local Howdens earlier and they said they Could come and have a look / draw up a plan early next week. I am not sure we can move fast enough for the October sale deadline.
Useful feedback about IKEA and the others as well. Will do more research later.

I think the space is approx 2.2 by 4.4 metres.

Another question for those with experience - how long would it take ?
We have a builder lined up

That a space big enough for quite a few units so I’d call it midsize. Ikea is cheap and ok. DIY kitchens do a wide range and arrive fully assembled. 5k should cover cabinetry and worktops.

Misty9 · 21/10/2020 23:49

I'm doing my midsized kitchen L shaped with one side 1.7m and the other side 1.6m (ish). Diy kitchens units cost 2.1k, worktop is 350, sink and tap 200 and fitting by a mate is 1k. He reckons 4-5 days to get it fitted really well. I spent another 1k on appliances but I needed everything. Tiles or splashback will be more on top.

Justpassingtime1 · 22/10/2020 06:18

Wickes has a sale on in January. Good quality.
Howdens is ok but the price depends on what your builder can negotiate ie how much profit he wants for himself!
I would keep away from Howdens (Lamona)appliances. The builder can get them cheap in a package but they are not noted to last.
Finally as the occupants are getting on years you may like to look at helpful things such as 60/40 fridge freezers high level ovens to make it easier to reach/stop having to stoop

Theredjellybean · 22/10/2020 06:26

I spent 5k on large DIY kitchen.. And utility room 2 yrs ago.
12 base units, an integrated fridge, a larder and broom cupboard unit and six wall units, drawers, all the kick boards, top fancy bits, and the worktop.
I did go for their cheapest range but it looks amazing and still looks like new, despite six adults and three dogs living here.
I paid £1400 to have it fitted and about £30 on handles.. Bought of amazon.
