Best areas to buy in Bristol on a budget

It's so big! I know the centre really well but know nothing about the more suburban spots.

Looking at £250-£300k, ideally a 3 bed/poss 2, must have a garden of some form that's not tiny. I love period properties but am sure they're out of this budget.

Any up and coming or areas to avoid?

I'd probably look at places like Frampton Cotterell, Chipping Sodbury - Rangeworthy is a little further out but is nice if your budget would stretch to it. I'd avoid Emersons Green and Bradley Stoke personally.

MaMaLa321 · 21/10/2020 06:35

does Fishponds fit? Apparently St Georges' is coming up as well.

Didicat · 21/10/2020 06:52

There are some lovely bits of Staple Hill and Kingswood. Officially they are south glos. but the benefit is lower council tax. Staple hill is right on the cycle path. If you don’t mind a bit of work £300k would get you a decent 3 bed 1930s house.

NW2SW · 21/10/2020 07:46

Do you mean near St George Park @MaMaLa321? There wade some nice houses but a really old thread said it's a ropey area, interesting to hear it's on the up.

Thank you @HappyDinosaur I think we'd like to keep the search within the M4 atm, part of Bristols appeal is access to public transport.

@Didicat I love 30s architecture, thanks!

Bedminster is fab, up and coming with lots going on!

HappyDinosaur · 21/10/2020 07:54

No worries, although if public transport is important to you I would consider looking elsewhere as it is notoriously bad and unreliable and Bristol. We had a new bus system put in place not that long ago and sadly it hasn't been very effective at all. The trains are similarly unreliable. Bath is much better for good transport links! Otherwise, Clifton is very nice but pricey, Kingswood has a lot of trouble, but Redcliff might be worth a look.

MaMaLa321 · 21/10/2020 08:31

apparently St George's is up and coming. So the Bristol Post says, anyway. Apparently Easton is the same, thought I've never seen the appeal for it myself.

Powerplant · 21/10/2020 08:41

Ditto Easton Nothing wrong with Bradley Stoke although no period properties as such but 5 mins away from M4 and plenty of supermarkets, gyms, train stations and GP services. Filton’s ok near major employers and about 10 mins from M4 plus older properties. It’s a great city good luck with your move op.

somethingsomethingbear · 21/10/2020 12:52

Out of interest, what are the things you look for / care about when looking for a new neighbourhood? And where do you get your info from?

DH and I are looking to move out of London in the next year or so but are still not set on a city to move to, but Bristol keeps coming up!

NW2SW · 21/10/2020 16:14

Thanks Easton looks promising, I'd love Bedminster but seems very popular atm!

@somethingsomethingbear is your Q directed at me?

Honestly it's normally work/life balance that's the main driver + stuff we like/value. But atm due to mine and DHs work situation we don't have much direction and honestly it's making decisions really tough!

Shock public transport? Bristol? Oh dear. You really need to be careful which areas you look at then

Unfortunately, south bristol is pretty much a no go if you are relying in public transport (which is a pity because it does have some really nice, green, cheaper up and coming areas). Honestly, it's hard to describe how bad it is.

I woyld say your best bet is either Fishponds (vibrant area, good transport links, beautiful parks, close to the bristol to bath cycle lane, not too expensive, lots of ammenities) or Southville (very hip right now. Very central, good schools nearby).

Filton or Horfield have good amenities and transport links but definitely arent 'cool' places (full of students and OAP's. A bit pricey too).

Thisisnotnormal69 · 21/10/2020 16:26

Redfield near Easton is lovely, houses within that budge and by church road which is really nice

hamblebamble · 21/10/2020 16:26

Erm, sorry about the typos. I havent slept well lately.

NW2SW · 21/10/2020 21:16

These are great @hamblebamble. Please do share any South options.

I'm not reliant on public transport, i have a car. I just like the idea of being within 20-30mins walk/cycle/bus of a major train station. Country idyls aren't my thing, I really don't like the idea of being solely reliant on a car.

Daughter was in Clifton, Bishopston, Horefield and Gloucester Rd then moved to Clevedon.

Clifton is lovely but expensive. I liked Bishopston more families not far to walk and shop on Gloucester Rd but quieter. Great Community gardens. Some older properties.

NoPinkPlease · 22/10/2020 00:11

Brislington or st Anne's?

MaMaLa321 · 22/10/2020 08:37

Windmill Hill?

catndogslife · 22/10/2020 15:01

If you like Bedminster you could also look at Bedminster Down / Bishopsworth/Headley Park which is the next area along and not as popular. There are good cycle routes to the city centre along Malago Greenway and local station at Parson Street provides access to Temple Meads.
Brislington/St Annes also has good access the the city centre by bicycle.
If you would consider more modern housing Stockwood and Whitchurch have 1960s/70s type housing within your budget.
What you need to bear in mind is that Bristol is quite hilly.

NW2SW · 22/10/2020 17:05

This is all super helpful, I've not heard of a lot of these. Thank you
