Hi all,
Just wondering if there are any Margate Mumsnetters there out there who can advise on good areas/streets to buy a property in the town. Are there areas to avoid? I
TIA!
Isabelle

Ramsgate and Margate have much nicer housing stock and are “prettier” than Folkestone IMO.

Id also interject - we did a little due diligence when it came to our great escape. We visted a friend in Folkston and got a good tour. Its faster to get to London than margate but we found the schools really lacking and I'm guessing that might be an important factor for mumsnetters. We personally found Ramsgate a little light on (stuff going on) our friends there still come into margate for drinks etc... We loved Whitstable too but just a bit small and chintzy for us. Sorry still havnt given the OP a street to buy on :D

I realise this is a very old thread, but — like @orac808 — I wanted to add my two cents (as someone who has been living in Margate for the last three years).

Moved here from North London, and the amount of griminess is pretty much on par. But at least it's improving — albeit slowly — and I never felt that way in my area of London.

There's a wonderful community here, and people who are actively working to make the place better — Rise Up, People Dem and Colourful Margate, for example.

Living here during the lockdown/s was a godsend for my own mental health — having space to work in a separate office from my partner, having a garden, going for walks along the coast. I also really like it here in the winter (but that might just be me!)

Yes all that good stuff too. Running along the coastal path - going down to the shore every couple days. Even if the weather is bleak it feels good. And even in the hard to socialize pandemic situation its been faster to make friends and feel part of a community than it has in any part of London I have lived.

Hi spaghettiwest and orac808. That makes me the third Margate Mumsnetter who is very happy to be here! Bring me a Ralf's pizza and lets hope to get on the ferris wheel this summer :)

Margate is on TV now … BBC1 … Wanted: a simple life

Following the same format as Wanted Down Under …. but Walthamstow to Margate isn't quite the same as London to Sydney Hmm

We're moving from South London to either Margate or Ramsgate (depending on the house!) later this year! Lovely to see some happy Thanet-ites among all the bad press. We absolutely love the vibe of Margate and can't wait to get there.

Just about to watch the Wanted programme...
