Ikea PAX wardrobes ideas

I am unsure as to which height to get. They come in 201cm or 236cm. Our ceiling height is 240cm.
Currently we have old wardrobes whichjust go to 200cm and put suitcases on the top. So I think we go for 201cm.
However dh thinks we ought to maximise space and it looks neater if the suitcases are in the wardrobes..
I consider this a waste of space. Yes some suitcases can be put in each other .
Any would appreciate your thoughts on this.

having recently constructed pax I wouldn't go for 236 with a ceiling height of 240, They are so much easier to construct laid down and you would need to construct those upright and with little room to manoeuvre

We would get some guys to make them up for is.
Its more about use of space

I looked at PAX and bought from Made in the end, similar price, much better quality and someone came to build them for me, included in the price

The assembly instructions (have a look at their website) say you need a ceiling height of 244cm for the 236cm wardrobes to be able to stand them up. You'd have to construct standing up which I think would be very difficult. We have the smaller size but then commissioned a joiner to build cupboards all the way to the ceiling on top, and then we got bespoke doors made to fit.

Interesting comments about the ones from made being "much better quality". We've had Pax wardrobes for years and years - never had quality issues with them. The current ones we have are nearly 10 years old. The last ones were 10 years old and still going strong when we sold them (we added new ones and annoyingly Ikea didn't do the same colour any more, so we had to replace all of them).

I too would avoid having to build them upright, and go for the smaller version.

DiscombobulatedAf · 20/10/2020 13:28

Go for the smaller version as you don’t have enough space between the wardrobe and the ceiling

We have a ceiling height of 240, went for the tallest wardrobe option, with doors not sliders as there isn't enough room for sliders. We had builders make them. They look fab.

Our PAX are 20 years old and survived a move. We've got 2,36 m high ones and if you assemble them on the ground and then move them upright you need the recommended 2,44 m ceiling for comfort (a2+b2=c2 - the only use I ever had for that) or you need to assemble them upright, which is possible but needs more people and a ladder, better 2. But it can be done!

We're getting PAX wardrobes delivered next week ( was so excited when a slot became available- I've been checking for over a week)

We've opted for the shorter ones as we only have 2cm clear to the ceiling with the taller ones.

We're going to get a joiner to fill the gap at the top and sides to get the built in look.

Just hoping that everything arrives as it should.

LlamaofDrama · 20/10/2020 19:45

We just sold a 16yo Pax that was still in fantastic condition, we just need a different configuration now. Replaced with 2 more. In addition to the 3 elsewhere in the house.

If you can store the suitcases anywhere else I have the 201cm ones with IKEA zippable fabric boxes on top which look neat, add storage and are easy to chuck around even if you're short!

Cannotcope4223 · 20/10/2020 19:46

Go for the tallest!!! Way more stylish and more expensive/fitted looking

Cornishmumofone · 20/10/2020 19:58

We went for the taller ones in a similar size room. They looked built in and it was easy to build them standing up.

ShakespearesSisters · 20/10/2020 20:15

I've had the taller ones for 8 years. Just this weekend built some for my daughters bedroom. We went for the taller ones. The key is having a ladder to stand on for the person holding the top on while the other person puts the second side on.
They take some time to assemble but well worth iit . In our bedroom we put a filler at the top and bought extra shelves and cut to right size to fill a gap where the chimney breast was and put a little kickboard at the bottom. Totally looks built in.
My husband put his back out as we were finishing the carcass of the 2nd one. I think it was just a ploy to not have to make and install drawers (10 mins from opening box to in the wardrobe, was impressed with myself) and shelves. I even managed all the doors just propping up on books to the right height.

FastFood · 20/10/2020 21:06

I assembled (with my BF's help) mine this weekend, sliding doors, 2m36 high (got high ceilings), that was long but pretty easy.
I'm super happy with them, really great value.

May I ask how much you guys paid for a joiner to fill the gaps?

theonlywayisup33 · 21/10/2020 10:57

I remeasured and our ceiling height is actually 152cm. Obviously did not it properly first time around.
So this should be enough clearance right?

Taller ones. Suitcases on top will just look messy and like you don’t have enough storage space.
