Timperley - is it nice?

Hi everyone,

We’re looking to move soon and are hoping to stay around South Manchester (we live in Chorlton at the moment).

We love Altrincham but have never been to Timperley and can’t seem to find any recent info about it anywhere. There are a couple of houses for sale that look really lovely but suspiciously underpriced... not sure if this means they’re in a bad area of Timperley or just weird bad luck for the sellers!

If anyone knows the area, I’d really appreciate any info you have about:

  • any dodgy areas
  • what it’s like to live there in general, is there any community stuff that goes on, etc
  • what it’s like for things like bars, coffee shops, food markets etc
  • what it’s like to bring up kids there (we have an 18m/o and hope to have another in the next year or so)
  • what the roads are like, especially around peak commuting times

Anything anyone could tell us would be really appreciated! Smile

I know the area well.
It’s really really good for schools both primary and high school.
The broom wood estate is very council so try and avoid that part on the outskirts
The main centre is nice. Quite small but has food shops/pubs/restaurants/costa etc nowhere near the tram station tho
Not as nice or big as altrincham but it is nice

Agree with pp. Sought after for schools - Wellington School very good. Timperley Sports Club is a bit of a hub for sports - hockey, lacrosse, football etc, lots going on for little ones. The area is slighlty odd in that Timperley/Altrincham/Hale are all separate areas but in reality, they're walking distance apart so whilst the centre of Timperley isn't very big, you'd walk into Altrincham maybe for more choice of bars/ restaurants etc, some additional baby & toddler groups. The whole area is quite family oriented.

Park Road (running up to the main Washway Road) is awful for traffic pretty much any time. The bonus is that you have Navigation Road (Timperley/Alty border) and Timperley tram stops which make travel into town 100x easier.

My sister lives on the Alty/Timperley border and I grew up in Hale and Alty so know the areas pretty well.

Timperley is a nice place to live, it’s very residential/suburban. It doesn’t have much going on but you’d be so close to Altrincham for eating out it doesn’t really matter. The schools are great, the village centre has a great butchers, some shops, a library, a few cafes etc. So plenty for day to day and very easy to get to other places.

An ideal place for a young family, there is a lot going on locally.

It’s fine - although I would choose sale / altrincham over it. The traffic in / out along park road can be dreadful.

On the whole it’s perfectly safe and you can get nice houses, so depends on your priorities. Large house in timperly and have to travel for shops / coffee shops / restaurants, vs smaller house in say altrincham which has more going on, just comes down to preference :)

Thanks everyone, this is all really useful info and good to know it’s generally a nice place to live and bring up a family.

@Tigger03 that’s exactly the discussion we keep having - buy a smaller house closer to where everything is or go further out and get a bit more space. We’re looking at 4 bed houses, which already seems to be pushing us out of the areas with more going on. We’ve looked pretty much everywhere in south Manchester and unless you have upwards of £500k it’s slim pickings in the most popular areas...

Completely get the struggle! We’re in Didsbury and a few years off the family house stage, but it’s fairly depressing that at a half a million pound budget (ours will be similar) there’s still huge compromises to be made. ‘It’s cheap up north though...Hmm

You’re probably already looking but worth looking at sale / urmston if you’re set on Trafford. But if not, everyone I know who lives in Bramhall loves it, and there’s more larger style houses so better value.

Timperley covers a big area and the most sought after bits (with house prices to match) tend to be those within walking distance of the metrolink. Aside from the tram the public transport is pretty shocking. There's a decent selection of local shops in the village and a few cafes popping up in local blocks of shops but nothing on a par with Chorlton.
I think the traffic is horrendous but probably no worse than Chorlton. The schools are a big draw for a lot of house buyers. I would avoid the Grange and Broomwood.
