Rental flat - washing machine still has water in it!

Was just about to do some washing and there's a pool of water in the machine. Not sure how long it's been like that! I never had this happen with my machine in my old place that I had for over 10 years.

I'm totally paranoid about things going wrong here and losing my deposit so am a bit worried about messing with it. Not sure what to do? It's a Hotpoint Aquarius + There's an option for "Pump" but will it pump it onto the floor?! Thanks for any advice.

Could you not just put it on a spin so it spins and drains the water?

Use the drain cycle?

just do a spin, or even a wash, and pump it out.

I expect the water has come from the sink.

a very common error is to connect the waste hose from the washer to the sink trap in such a way that the sink water can run into it. If you post a photo of the hose where it connects to the kitchen drain pipe I can tell you if that's likely.

Another less common fault is the electric water valve in the washer, that is opened when the programmer tells it to fill, is worn out or clogged with scale, greit or rust from the pipes, and water is leaking through it.

In this case, turn off the appliance tap(s) where they connect the blue (and sometimes red) filling hoses to the (usually copper) water pipes, usually under the sink.

I have only seen that happen after plumbing repairs in a very old house, and when the repairman changed the valves, I could see a clog of rust flakes inside. This is an easy fix for the repairman, though I remember that the Bosch valve is more expensive than most other brands because it is in some way non-standard.

This will presumably be the landlord's responsibility but you might as well work out what the problem is before getting it fixed.

If it is the first option, you can fix it yourself in four minutes using a piece of string, which may be more convenient than waiting for a repair(wo)man.

I pressed the drain button and it worked! Could hear the water swirling down the sink draining away. Relieved that it was so easy and I didn't get a puddle on the floor. Will keep an eye on it after washing in future - thanks everyone!

If you haven't ever washed in this machine before it might be nice to run it on an empty cycle at its very hottest setting to make it extra clean. I would wash with some soda crystals in the drum too.
