Back to Back Parking

Hello all,
In new-build estates, is it usual now a days to have back to back parking, .i.e., one car in front of another and not side by side. Please see the red circles in the attached image.
Would this put you off buying a property?
This development is in Oxfordshire.

Back to Back Parking

It’s not ideal- less convenient to shuffle cars around when the one parked behind wants to go out. So then people only park one on the drive, the other on the road. Add in visitor parking, and households with more than 2 cars... suddenly the road is full of parked cars. Then it’s hard to reverse onto driveway so even more people park on the road.

But, all houses have compromises!

MoirasRoses · 16/10/2020 10:42

Yep, very common around here! Saves space I suppose, which is usually the aim of a new development 🥴 It’d be pretty annoying I imagine, we don’t have double parking but we have a garage & single drive & we have two cars. I’ll be honest, we never use the garage. We park the second car on the street. My parents live in a large, detached new(ish) build & even though they have a double drive, it’s an odd shape so even they have to move cars 🙈

It wouldn’t stop me buying a house though. It’s a inconvenience but if the house is ideal then 🤷🏼‍♀️

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 16/10/2020 10:45

Very usual. We live on a new development (house is 3 years old), also in Oxfordshire and that’s how all the parking is here.

AriettyHomily · 16/10/2020 10:47

It's pretty standard now I think. Annoying. Wouldn't put me off unless you have other non new build options with double or bigger drives.

punkypurple · 16/10/2020 10:48

I'd insure both people for both cars and then you can just take the one nearest the road.

custardbear · 16/10/2020 11:06

The purple houses tonthe left in the picture look like side by side parking but suspect hey cost more?! You kinda get what you pay for usually, I guess they could have put the houses further back and you could have side by side but that would shorten the gardens

SK72 · 16/10/2020 11:26

Thank you all for your replies.
The purple houses are 5 beds and only they come with double garage and side by side parking.
The street is very narrow as well and so to avoid the inconvenience of moving cars, parking partly on the curb is an option. However, this can cause difficulties if you are reversing on to the driveway.
There is one development nearby which is offering double garage but the built completion date is in May 2021 (after stamp duty holiday) and it would cost £15k extra.

Tandem parking is really common. Not all the houses on there seem to have a tandem drive though. On our new build estate of about 70 houses only 11 have drives like this. It depends on the developer.

Africa2go · 16/10/2020 19:29

Are you considering either of these houses? On a completing different point, the one on the left (red/pink) faces directly into a culdesac opposite. The headlights of any cars would shine directly into the house.

Agree with a pp that I'd insure both cars for H and I so we didn't need to switch cars. Everyone parking on the road if the road is narrow would irritate me.

Shadowboy · 16/10/2020 22:00

The map looks like a St Modeen development. If so all of their developments favour tandem parking.

Shadowboy · 16/10/2020 22:01

St. Modwen sorry

Thanks for your sharing your thoughts. Yes the roads are quite narrow so if people park on the carb then I'm anticipating it would be tight to reverse on the driving

I live in Bicester and what puts me off some of the newer estates around us is this as everyone parks on the road. You then have narrow streets and that feeling of all being packed in like sardines. Really tricky when it's Icy as well.

wegetthejobdone · 16/10/2020 23:04

We have it here - 1980s houses, but there is a good amount of on street parking and much wider roads than you would find on a new build estate so its not an issue. I probably wouldn't buy a new build with that arrangement particularly if you are on an access road not a cul de sac as on street parking and moving cars will be much more difficult.

SK72 · 17/10/2020 09:23

Thank you all for sharing your thoughts.
Would you buy a old built semi-detached with double driveway or a new built detached property with tandem parking?

MrsTWH · 17/10/2020 17:56

It would absolutely put me off, I wouldn’t but y a house with tandem parking. I’d rather buy an older property with a driveway/side by side parking.
