Buying a house in Leicester

It looks like I might end up moving to Leicester for work and I'm looking for advice on areas to consider for buying a house. I'll have a budget up to around £250k, ideally for three bedrooms. I'm used to living in big, cosmopolitan cities, so I'd prefer not to be anywhere too suburban. I don't have DC so schools aren't a concern at the moment. Where would you recommend?

I'm from Birmingham and now live in a large village not far from Leicester, technically the county. We moved here because of work.
I would recommend renting somewhere to get a feel for the place first.

Personally, I would never move back to Birmingham because it was too busy and the area I am from is unsafe. It was a terrible place to live.
I like Leicestershire because it's safe, friendly, good schools and there are lots of local amenities. It's very easy to get to the countryside or city centre. There are things to do but it depends on your interests.
I also like that it's easy to get to different parts of the country, although the nearest beach is 2.5 hours drive away but that's the issue being in the Midlands.

I think it depends on where you end up working and how big of a commute you can put up with. Good luck OP.

What amenities do you mean, @Dontbugmemalone? I lived in a village close to Uppingham, and thought there was nothing to do anywhere near. It was certainly safe, but I found it very insular, like a pp. I joined everything and got involved in various volunteering things, but never really made any headway socially.

Aw, I can't comment on buying property but I lived in Leicester for about 4 yrs as a student (moved away 2017) and had a lovely time there. No DC at the time so that wasn't a factor but me and DH both happy in the city and have fond memories...eating/drinking out, The Curve theatre, the market (largest outdoor market in Europe I think?), shopping centres, parks, trips a bit further out to places like the bird park hah, friendly locals, universities, festivals and celebrations like Diwali, Riverside festival, comedy festival etc, the museums, Queen Elizabeth swimming pool. I also had a lot of healthcare contact whilst there due to various issues I had and it was all great, much better and faster on the whole than since I've moved back to our home city (Northern city). There's definitely less of a cultural 'scene' (e.g. a lot less museums/galleries) and less of a good nightlife there than where we are from but it wasn't a huge deal or something we noticed that much really. Lots of visible poverty and homelessness but that's the case in all big cities now surely, our home city is now the same if not worse.

@Nualasays I'm sorry to hear that you've had that experience. In our area, there are local shops, a couple of pubs/takeaways, a supermarket, a library (important to me), a park and green spaces, cycle paths, 2 good primary schools and activities for adults and children. I am an introvert so made an effort to show my face to various things but didn't develop friendships from them but that could partially my issue too.

I do understand what you mean about it being insular but I have found that comes from families who have lived in the same place for a few generations. I have experienced the same living elsewhere as well.
I have made friends from newcomers in the area or at work.

I don't much about Uppingham, is it very rural?
I'm fortunately not too far from countryside, fosse park or the centre if needed.

Op, I grew up in Leicester. It’s true that it is multicultural but it lacks vibrancy. It was a dull place to live as a child and teenager.

I’ve also so lived in Nottingham and Birmingham and definitely prefer these cities over Leicester. There’s a lot more to do and places to visit. And Yes, some areas are rough but tbh if you’re from London you should be used to it

Although I will say that I like the West End. Last I checked there was a number of bars and restaurants in the area. Its also a walking distance to town and the train station.

Have you looked at the outskirts Sileby, barrow, quorn, or the south side great glen ?

Leicestershire has lovely villages but the OP did say she was looking to be in a city.

Having lived in Leicester, Leicestershire, Nottingham and Nottinghamshire I would choose West Bridgford over all of them. We live in Market Harborough currently but only because partners work is South in Northamptonshire. It is a nice town but it's not exactly buzzing. I would love to live back in West Bridgford again if it was feasable.
Leicester city centre is meh, I lived in both clarendon park and stoneygate both are nice but not a patch on what West Bridgford/Nottingham have to offer.
Where is your job in Leicester? Just trying to suss out what is commutable.

Leicester is ok but has the feel if a large town rather than a city to me. I think Nottingham and Birmingham have more of a city feel..horses for courses.
