Where to live (south of?) Leeds

We are considering a move due to work.. know nothing about the area whatsoever really. Random comments I've had from people in real life are that there's nowhere nice south of Leeds and north of Sheffield and Doncaster which I'm sure isn't true. Been told north Leeds is nicer and I guess I am seeing that reflected in the prices of houses but I would prefer to be south if possible rather than further north due to getting back to other family. Been told that as a southerner I will struggle to fit in.. which worries me a lot as now it's been said, though DH is from Leeds. Am I worrying for nothing or might that be true in some places?
Looking for village to small town sized I guess without being too far from bigger places/amenities. Good schools are important. Pre primary aged children at the moment but I know it will come around quickly.

Anything anyone can share to help is much appreciated thank you!

I wouldn't call Sherburn lovely I'm afraid. But yes, there are some other villages around there that are nice, but getting pretty pricy if commuting distance to York.

OP, HD8 is really nice, and for me would have the plus of being closer to the hills than say Ackworth. If your DH is happy with the commute then it would be great for you I'm sure. He just didn't seem to be all that keen on his current one which is only half an hour (though I'm surprised he manages Alwoodley to Stourton in that time tbh, maybe it's with the roads being quiet at the moment!)

@whatsthecomingoverthehill well I've lived here for a few years and would call it lovely, friendly village, lots of shops, old girls school with classes, annual food and craft festival and gala, good schools, 2 train stations nearby, nice park, nature reserve... could go on!!

Thank you @BikeRunSki

I'll take a look at those other places just mentioned but yes have realised closer to York is pricey as much as north Leeds and Harrogate etc.

@whatsthecomingoverthehill Yes I am also suprised he does it in around half an hour but yes suppose it is quieter at the moment. He also leaves at 8 so think he finds it gets most busy as hes almost there rather than when he leaves. He doesn't mind the half an hour. He just sort of wishes that given the small distance that it was shorter if that makes sense. I think 40 mins would be his max which puts us right at the edge of being commutable from HD8 areas as far as I can tell.. at this time of afternoon its giving me a time of 30mins from HD8 near Denby Dale to his workplace. Guess that doesn't account for anything happening on the motorway.. however I have driven that stretch many many times when visiting and it is rarely busy whenever we have used it.. not sure how much busier it is in rush hour though.

Glad to hear that you like it newmummy, it was only my impression.

I think it can just be variable ClockSpanner. But if you're doing it every day it probably isn't that big a proportion where you're queueing. Hopefully once they stop messing around with the motorways in the area it will be a bit more reliable too.
