What's good about a separate bath and shower?

The house we've just bought has this, newly renovated, and there's just enough space for it but not really, I'd say. Why do people like having a separate bath and shower?

We're real bath people so we're thinking of changing it to a lovely huge bath with overhead shower but it seems a bit of a shame to rip it out when it's been recently done. The existing bath is fine but not amazing. Should I accept it and grow to love a separate bath and shower?

Are you planning on living in the house for more than 6 mths? (Arbitrary period Grin)

Do what suits you best...

I’m not too fussed and have a shower over bath. The bath is wide and deep and the shower has a rain shower head. Whenever I stay in hotels, there’s always a walk-in shower but honestly can’t see the benefit.

RedMarauder · 12/10/2020 21:27

Rip the shower out otherwise it is just something else for you to keep clean.

I lived in a flat share once with a separate bath and a separate shower in the bathroom. None of us used the bath so it was a case of cleaning the dust off the bath every few weeks.

irregularegular · 12/10/2020 21:29

Showers over baths will not be as spacious and easy to stand in as a nice big separate shower. But if it makes the bathroom a bit crowded then I wouldn't.

stickygotstuck · 12/10/2020 21:31

I was going to say, less stuff to clean if you tend to use one but not the other.

We had this in a flat I lived in. No soap scum or mould to clean off the bath, just the dust. Bit of a waste of space though!

HelenUrth · 12/10/2020 21:32

If you're likely to have older guests to stay they may appreciate being able to step into a shower rather than climbing into a bath.

RuthW · 12/10/2020 21:35

I would love a walk in shower. At 52 with a bit of arthritis I will be struggling in s couple of years to step in the bath. If my daughter wasn't living with me it would be gone.

Murmurur · 12/10/2020 21:41

It's an aspirational thing somehow, I guess it says something about having a bigger house, but I've never got it either. Much like en suites. I'd rather a nice spacious bath with shower over. Maybe a P shaped bath though they do look like they'd take an age to fill.

MasksGlovesSoapScrubs · 12/10/2020 21:46

I'd prefer them to be separate.

bluebluezoo · 12/10/2020 21:46

We’ve just ripped out a bath/shower and put in a separate shower and bath 😂.

I think it depends on your bathroom. Our last house had a separate shower, but they’d squidged in a 2/3 size bath. So there I’d have had a bigger bath and an overhead shower.

Live with it a while before you decide. There are many pro’s to a walk in shower- less slippy, no having to step out, no negotiating a shower curtain or screen, plus they are definately more spacious as you have a flatter space to move around on.

It's such a personal thing.

I LOVE a walk in shower. I lived with a rubbish shower over the bath & looked forward to renovating the bathroom. So when I was doing it I was so excited, only to be brought down to earth by being told I'd have to have a step up into the shower as the floor was concrete. (Obviously logical, but I just hadn't considered it!). It really spoilt the walk in shower for me so went for one over the bath. Bought an 800 wide 1800 long square cut bath to maximise the 'flat foot space'. 6 years on it STILL pisses me off having to climb over the side of the bath to shower.

Rant over 🤣

Short story put in what makes YOU happy IF you can.

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 12/10/2020 21:50

We have an apartment and a holiday home and weirdly (only just thought about it) in each we have a shower room and then a large bathroom with separate bath and shower. I love having the walk in shower and the kids love jumping in the bath, so it’s the best of both for everyone!

BestOption · 12/10/2020 21:50

Yes more slippery and arthritic knees not a great combination!

Circle89 · 12/10/2020 21:52

Having a separate bath and shower is more of a benefit for the people who like hot showers as you can completely close yourself in with the steam unlike a bath with a screen. There isnt really a benefit for people who prefer baths in this situation only the drawback as you mention of a smaller bath to accomodate both in the room. If you are staying in the house get the bath that suits you.

honigbutter · 12/10/2020 21:52

I love my separate shower. It has to be a decent size though, too cramped is awful.

A shower over the bath is just ok if it's all there's room for, but the older you get the less comfortable you are climbing into the bath for a shower!

Obviously have what suits you in your own home though.

Vello · 12/10/2020 21:55

I hate climbing into a bath for my shower. I have low blood pressure and I do finish my shower with cold water, but still I get the fear climbing out.

In my perfect world I'd have a separate room for each -- a bath, a shower, and a loo/sink.

Chewbecca · 12/10/2020 21:55

I have dodgy hips and knees and find over bath showers tricky & slippery. I would hate to not have a separate shower cubicle.

WombatChocolate · 12/10/2020 21:59

Having both is good if you have the space.

Walk in shower or cubicle avoids the climbing in and out, often a dodgy shower curtain or screen and means you have plenty of room in the shower. Also means when having a bath there’s no shower to drip on you or curtain/screen in way. You get the best elements of showers and baths.

Shower over bath speaks of smaller bathroom. It’s less luxurious generally speaking.

I’d say a separate shower and bath makes a house slightly more desirable...but I wouldn’t say it adds a huge amount, especially if a bathroom wi overhead shower is luxurious.

If you have a further bathroom like an en-suite, which might well just have walk in shower, there might be less call for a separate shower in main bathroom. However, most people who can fit both in and who are re-doing a bathroom will have both these days. I’m not sure I’d take it out if it’s decent.

Vast majority of showers aren’t completely closed in though? I always hated showers as could never get warm enough, until we got a “cabin” shower. That gets wonderfully hot. Normal enclosures don’t keep the steam in...

Avacadoandtoast · 12/10/2020 22:10

I wouldn’t like climbing in and out of the bath for my daily shower...and having showers in the bath means the bath isn’t nice and clean ready for the time I do want to run a nice bubble bath as it would have been used for showers.

gavisconismyfriend · 12/10/2020 22:13

Walk in shower - pain to clean, the p-trap is hideous for hair and soap scum. I’d swap to a shower over the bath any day, but no space sadly

endoflevelbaddy · 12/10/2020 22:44

I'm just having this debate with our en suite we're about to renovate. Never had space for a bath in en-suite so love the idea of having my own that the kids won't mess up with their bath bombs, but I shower most of the time and I'm worried clambering in and out of the bath will quickly lose it's novelty.

At the minute it's a small bath and small shower cubicle so it's the worst of both worlds. Need to make my mind quickly Grin

thegcatsmother · 12/10/2020 23:23

I have a separate bath and walk in shower. I have the space. Dh likes the shower, and I love a good soak in he tub. I don't like clambering in the bath to shower, and having had to do that whilst we were abroad, it was lovely to come home to a shower that doesn't involve hurting my cranky knee.
