What size TV?

Everything is going smoothly with the purchase so I am allowing myself a bit of evening internet window shopping.

The main room is massive,15x5m with the kitchen at one end, then space for dining table. Then I have my eyes on a gorgeous large corner sofa.

Question then, what size tv should I be looking at? I have never had a large tv so quite enjoying looking.

We have a 52 inch screen it took some getting used to after a 32 inch but now its great watching programs and the people look full size

We have a very large living room and have a 65" tv.

rslsys · 10/10/2020 21:10

There's a calculator which will tell you the size of the screen based on the distance you are sitting from it.

GrumpyHoonMain · 10/10/2020 21:13

I would say 50-55 if the distance is 5m as the wall mounting and sofa will take some of the space away. 60 inch might be too big /pixellated

Rollercoaster1920 · 10/10/2020 21:32

5m wide is 65 inch territory. You could go larger but the price increase is considerable.

This is not an issue with a 4k television.

Thanks, lots of happy browsing looking at 65” and above. It will be a massive change from the 32” we currently have.

We’ve got a giant 72’ tv. It is ridiculously naff but I love it, it’s almost like the cinema.

Aquamarine1029 · 10/10/2020 22:23

Have fun shopping! I do think you'll really love a bigger tv. I've never been bothered with tv's, gadgets, etc, but when my husband bought the 65" I immediately loved it. It's so nice to watch movies and nature shows on. I will add that getting a sound bar along with the tv is well worth it.

passthemustard · 10/10/2020 22:25

I'd go 65 tbh. Everyone who comes over says 'is your telly big enough?' And I say yes, it is, thanks.

Aquamarine1029 · 10/10/2020 22:30

My in-laws have an 85" and it's bonkers. Far too big imo, but FIL is a total tech/ gadget freak and just had to have it.

Aquamarine1029 · 10/10/2020 22:30

I meant to add a Hmm to the above.

DblEspresso · 10/10/2020 23:03

its simple, buy the biggest you can afford. You will very quickly get used to the large size and wouldnt ever want to go back to anything smaller.

Hiddenmnetter · 11/10/2020 09:50

It depends - if you're sitting about 6 feet from the TV, bigger than about 40" will seem too big - you'll not comfortably take in the vision of the whole screen easily. The size you buy should be in direct relation to how far you sit from the TV. An 85" TV for instance would be quite uncomfortable to look at if you were sitting any closer than about 10 feet I would think. Maybe 12? It will almost feel like you have to scan from left to right to actually take in the whole view.

JoJoSM2 · 11/10/2020 18:32

We only have a little TV in the kitchen so it’s good for catching up on news etc. Otherwise, we try to keep the space more conducive to chatting and doing other things. The house is large so there’s a separate cinema room - sounds like your place is big too? That has a huge 4K TV. 80inches, I think. There’s also a fab surround sound, cinema style lighting and a drinks area.

Only because you're asking about TVs. Have you considered the Samsung 'The Frame' range? It does come in different sizes. But what I think is cool about it is that when the TV is off it is designed to look like a piece of artwork on your wall. Very clever. And I want one!

We have a 32" ( upgrade from previous 19"), but I hate big tellies. They feel really intrusive and ugly to me...but I think I might be in the minority! ( The programmes are no better on a bigger screen!)

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 11/10/2020 23:44

We've gone up to a 32 but that's my maximum, the room is quite large but has nice original features and fireplace, so I don't want aTV dominating the space
