White goods left behind

Would you keep the washing machine, dishwasher and refrigerator left behind by previous owner? How would you clean them out to make them new/fresh? Or would you just buy new ones?

I've had my oven professionally cleaned and it was like new when finished.
If you're struggling to feel comfortable with using these items there are charities that can take them, like the British Heart Foundation.

You can buy washing soda crystals from the supermarket and do an empty boil wash with them in the washing machine. That will clean out the inside really well. You can remove the washing powder drawer and give it a really good clean. You can also buy dishwasher cleaners and do an empty run with that in the dishwasher to clean it out inside. Outside I would use bleach or fairy power spray and give it a good clean. The fridge I would also give it a good clean with bleach or milton. I wouldn't throw them away unless broken or really grotty.

Surely most people use 'secondhand' white goods when they rent, you just give them a quick clean. It's no different when you buy a house which comes with white goods. If you are especially concerned maybe use some bleach.

People only leave white good behind when they sell a house because they are either integrated or well past their sell by date.

Or because they are moving somewhere with integrated appliances. Our sellers left behind a one-year-old fridge-freezer because there was no need or space for it in their new house.

Last house the knackered old fridge and freezer served us a few weeks until we sourced a suitable fridge freezer and made space for it.

This one, the nasty integrated washer did us for 4 days. Still using the dishwasher 3 years on, though it does need replacing.

I would wipe them down with something like a flash wipe (or flash with bleach if worried about covid though would rinse that if anywhere might eat from). Get dishwasher and washing machine cleaning capsules from supermarket and run on empty then inside done too. Then they are clean inside and out. If you are really bothered clean out all the washing machine filters too though think anything in a filter has been washed.

If you think about it you're using lots of other things the people will have touched - fridge and dishwasher are for clean things and washing machine cleans things.

I always buy 2nd hand appliances. You can buy a dishwasher cleaner pack, and a washing machine cleaner pack. Run on a long hot wash. They will sparkle afterwards.

I do understand your concerns. But give them all a really good clean, put the washing machine cleaning in the washer and clean the filter. Maybe run bleach through it as well. It is such a bonus to have white goods when you move in and it will be absolutely fine.

We left our 6 month old large American type fridge freezer when we sold our house. We had removed the integrated f/f to fit it in so felt it was only fair to leave the one we replaced it with.

You can buy washing machine and dishwasher cleaners so if they would make you feel better I would use those then run the equivalent of a 'boil wash' or the most intensive cycle

Milton sterilising fluid is good too
