Is £2,700 +VAT a reasonable price for a new front door?

Been quoted £2,700 +VAT for a new hardwood front door and door frame, custom design and 3 double glazed panels. Does this sound reasonable? I'm in the SE, near London but outside M25.

This quote is from a local company, and I have previously had a much higher quote from a national company for a composite door, so it's seems okish to me, but still obviously £££.

I'm looking at doing this as part of the green grant, and this company is the only one who covers my area, is doing the scheme, and offers hardwood (which I prefer), so I can't get any comparable quotes - the other companies who will be quoting are only offering composite or UPVC. So hoping someone on here can advise Smile

when we were burgled a few years ago, the insurance company paid direct for our new back door, but it sounds very similar in price... hardwood, custom made but ours has 9 window panels and was about £2.5k in Kent.
At the time, I thought it was a lot of money, but its very heavy, well made and gives a VERY satisfying clunk when it shuts

Very helpful - thanks!

Looking at the title, I thought it was a lot. However, for a custom one and all in, probably not too crazy.

We paid £1500 for a composite one, custom sized, but this was in combination with new windows too. We priced up hardwood and it was almost double.

Thanks - helpful!

I'm a carpenter. It seems reasonable to me if just the door and frame as it's hardwood (although you don't say which?) and custom made. If it's including the ironmongery and fitting too, it's an absolute bargain.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 08/10/2020 20:11

That is super helpful, thanks! This just the initial quote without any detail as to which exact wood etc. It doesn't say that hardware isn't included but I had assumed not, although I had assumed that fitting was so I clearly need to find out more.
Do you have any advice as to which wood is the best @skankingpiglet if you don't mind me asking? If I'm gonna do it I'd rather do it properly and get a door that will last.

I was recently quoted £3000 (incl VAT) for a made to measure front door, frame and side window. Locks, door furniture and painting included. Based on the research I did, I’d say that is pretty cheap though (although obviously still a crazy amount of money 🙈)

I would get clarification on what is included in the price you were quoted, if I were you, as locks and other door furniture can be pretty expensive.

I can’t remember what hardwood we went for, but as we are going to paint it anyway we went for one of the less pretty, but strong hardwoods.

skankingpiglet · 09/10/2020 09:44

Is it going to be painted and will it be taking an absolute battering from the weather (no porch/looking straight out on to farm land, that sort of thing)? If painted (and maintained!) and reasonably sheltered then cheaper hardwoods like sapele are fine. Even if less sheltered they are fine as long as you are very 'on top' of the maintenance, although they won't last as long as their oak counterpart. If you are varnishing rather than painting then you will obviously need to take the aesthetic of the wood into consideration when choosing.

As PP mentioned, front door ironmongery can be very expensive (although don't scrimp on this!). Just the night latch is between £70‐150 if you go mid range, and presumably you will want a dead lock, door number, and letter box too plus the hinges.

Thank you @skankingpiglet

It is fairly protected - with a deep but open porch, and doesn't face into the prevailing wind. I will be painting it, and yes - I know ironmongery is expensive!

Thanks again 👍👍👍

Front doors always seem pricey...I found a cancelled order door with frame and locks on ebay....hardwood and painted black....lucky it fitted my gap...cost £180...search...you may be lucky.

Bloody hell - good work!

We paid about £3k for double doors, hardwood, frame, 2 big glazed panels, ironmongery and chirpy fitting. It’s a lovely solid door.
