Studio flat

I have a 2 bed shared ownership flat. For various reasons I am considering buying on the open market and looking at studio flats as I want to know I can pay the mortgage off by the time I am 55. I have recently been diagnosed with a progressive condition and I think I will be looking to work part time later. I am single no kids.

Anyone live successfully/happily long term on a studio flat? Pitfalls and plusses?

My spare bedroom is part of my living room.

I have a proper wall bed (look at London Wall Bed company). It has a proper sprung mattress (same as on my usual bed) and is very comfy.

You secure the duvet on with a strap, bung the pillows into the holders on the front and fold it up in the morning. Having something like this would make a studio work.

lots of choices!

We've just bought a Murphy bed. It comes in a smart white cabinet. It was from Hideaway Beds and was the Diva model. The company were amazing to deal with.

I must say the Murphy beds look amazing. I can't get my head round the swivel one. They are priced at what I thought i.e. 2-4k which is not cheap but an option for the right flat.

Thanks all you have given me lots to think about.

Diva bed above is about £1k with the cabinet but without the mattress. I also like The Studybed company. They have desk/bed combinations. I saw one at the Ideal Home Show.

If you come north you will get plenty for your money.
Where in Scotland do you have family?

@exercisebeaver I have the swivel one it is very clever.

Only downside is it is quite a deep unit so you need to have the space. I love it when new people visit and I tell them I'going to make up their bed. They just sort of stand there looking confused....

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 11/10/2020 00:29

If you have a progressive illness, how easy will something like a Murphy bed be to deal with? Will you need space for wheelchair access?

ExerciseBeaver · 11/10/2020 19:20

I love that @opinionatedfreak!

I have been looking and thinking about making the North my adoptive home Smile. Lots to think about.

I saw that one in Tod @Vello!

I don't have family in Scotland but Dumfries is not far from Carlisle (family are North of Lake District). I could up the budget and take out a mortgage. I fluctuate between reality and denial, but fatigue is going to be a slow development so maybe its worth going for more space.

@ExerciseBeaver sorry you are in this situation. Think long term about transport too.

I’ve watched several sets of parents relocate rurally only to find that driving then became difficult and it was a nightmare.

A small, well located flat with lots of amenities in walking distance has a lot going for it.

RandomMess · 11/10/2020 21:17

Oh I like Carlisle and Lancaster!!

Will you need a job? Better prospects in Lancaster tbh but thinking Carlisle is so much flatter!!

ExerciseBeaver · 11/10/2020 21:24

Thank you I really agree about the amenities. I have never been to Lancaster, one to investigate.

It's a very small city, lots of students, all the amenities you need are in the centre. Lots of nice dog walking areas in the city (market town) as well as further out. On the edge of Forest of Bowland, merges into Morecambe with nice prom, train station and its FLAT.

Great bus services (students), hospital in town, two animal rescue centres 😂

Buses and trains to Kendal plus the line to Barrow.

butmumineedit · 11/10/2020 21:33

Exercisebeaver, you can get a 1 bedroom bungalow in Grantham , within walking distance to train station, and be in London Kings cross in 75 mins. Plenty of options up here in Lincolnshire.

SBTLove · 11/10/2020 22:40

Lancaster has plenty 2up2down houses under £100k and with little gardens for future DDog.

RandomMess · 12/10/2020 07:43

Would a 2 up 2 down with a stair lift work?

Plenty of apartments in the centre.

Vello · 12/10/2020 08:32

Many 2 up 2 down terrace stairs are too steep for a stairlift. We had to get a through floor lift put in when we lived in one. They cost about £12k.

I spent five years living in a studio. I felt quite unhappy and spent a lot of time out because I got very fed up of being in one room all the time. I also didn't have a bed because I own two bikes (my pride and joy and hobby which keeps me sane) and there wasn't space so I just slept on the floor. I'm much happier now I have a separate bedroom and kitchen and a sense of space.
