Opinions please - log burner or gas fire

Hello
We are redecorating and are having a new fire. Currently its an awful electric wall mounted thing that was already here when we moved in. We like the log burner style so are going to get the chimney hollowed out for this. The big question is do we have a gas one or a wood burning one? On one hand i appreciate that gas burning ones are likely more expensive to run but the wood burning ones concern me in terms of mess and smoke and ashes etc.
Does anyone have any experience or advice they can offer please? This is the type of style that we are looking at - just want to decide gas or wood burning?
Thanks

I have a log burner. It heats the house really well with property warmth.

Kiln dried logs are cheap if you can store bulk. We clean the ash via a tray underneath - 10 second job straight into a bin bag. Quick vacuum of spilt ash. Door is cleaned every two weeks with a damp cloth and ash.

Our bills have reduced massively.

We have underfloor heating and a log burner in one room. It’s great for those very cold evenings but we don’t actuality need it to heat anything. We have our own supply of wood. I’d never use fossil fuel and we don’t have gas in the village. We use air source heat pumps and the log burner is just for back up.

We have a gas fire, it was in the house when we moved it. It looks just like a log stove and has the roaring fire effect. I love it, it's very clean, turns off and on instantly and there's no fuss. I'll be installing another in the next house.

If you are in a city then log burners might be outlawed soon. Due to particulates

It was this ^^ that made me question the environmental impact. I know that gas is a fossil fuel, but I also know that anything that is burned in a stove or an open fire, be it wood or coal, creates particulates.

The gas fire that was already in our house is a coal effect one that has real flames www.diy.com/departments/focal-point-blenheim-full-depth-brass-effect-gas-fire/34866_BQ.prd?storeId=1189&ds_rl=1272379&ds_rl=1272409&ds_rl=1272379&gclid=Cj0KCQjw8fr7BRDSARIsAK0Qqr6560saj2udXjKFABOKS_yng8FDZIvoQseGesxRH3if7Je-E3JGPFUaAqAuEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds, and gives off loads of heat. I am happy to stick with it.

@MakeAPeaCry

Only ever had a few spiders in my log pile but I did once find a very dead, ery squashed, very dried out squirrel Grin
I never had spiders either, but on one occasion I did go to grab logs from the pile I'd stupidly left on the ground by the back door and a rat jumped out of the pile and gave me the shock of my life! I stopped storing the logs in a pile by the back door after that! Having said that, I miss our woodburner enormously now that we've moved to a house without one. We can't wait to put one back in... that lovely smell when the fire is roaring, sigh...

I grew up with coal fires (no CH till 1995). I’d warn that the wood burners in holiday cottages set off my DH asthma (or so we found out last time) so as much as it was all very romantic, I’d not install any coal/wood fires.

In our last house we installed a very fancy and very expensive inset gas fire. It was beautiful, and so easy to use. BUT it cost way more to run than the manufacturers said (they said less than 10p and hour. Smart meter said more like 45p) and it was so pathetic at getting heat round the room. We had to sit next to it to get warm.

We have had a wood stove installed here and like it a hundred times more. It’s incredibly good at heating the room, it is a DEFRA approved model for clean burning and we use a mix of logs and heat logs (very cheap) to run it most evenings now. I have an ash hoover but really just scoop it out once a week. You use ash and a scourer to clean the glass. I have a sideboard filled with the logs, fire starters and matches etc in and a metal sealed wood bin outside in the side return so no spider. I love it. Money well spent.

We burnt around 4 logs yesterday around lunch time. We didn’t need the hearing on or the fire lit in the evening it was still incredibly warm all evening.

The log burner keeps the heat in as it’s metal and like a giant really hot radiator.

I love mine.

We have a gazco stove and we love it. It's so much more convenient than wood and it means you don't need to keep topping up wood , which means you don't need to open the door which makes the whole house smell of smoke. There is also instant heat instead of having to faff with wood and wait for it to heat up. Plus it's controlled with a remote control so we can easily adjust the temperature and level of flames or turn it off.
I've had a wood burner before and 300% prefer gas.
