Under stairs storage

Looking for advice.
We're redecorating, and looking to make under the stairs look neater.
Had a quote from Sharps for units, and it's £3k.

The stairs are standard size, and the plan is 3 doors, as per the sketch.
Has anyone else had similar done, and if so, do you think 3k is reasonable?
Thank you.

Find a local company. They will probably do it for about 1-1.5k. I had a quote from sharps for fitted wardrobes, they came in at 4.5k. I got it done for 1.2k from a local company.

We've just had 6 drawers and a cupboard put in for £800. It took the guy a day and a half. It looks brilliant and I am thrilled.

We kept the costs down by going for primed MDF on the fronts and painting it ourselves, but the original quote was for gloss and just over £1k IIRC.

Perhaps I've misunderstood the drawing, but shouldn't it cover the entire space (to the top)?

I think there are three doors not shown in the drawing.

This is almost identical to ours.

You got a bargain notso! Nice one.

I'd expect around £2k going by the quotes mum got for her similar installation.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 07/10/2020 14:04

@notso that's pretty much what I'm after! Who did you use, may I ask?
I did think the quote was quite reasonable. Not so sure now.
Originally it came in at 6k, but apparently they're doing a deal! He said they'd have to cut a bedroom unit door in half, basically. I'd be paying for the WHOLE door, so I asked if I'd get the rest of it, he said no. I was likeHmm

@giantangryrooster sorry, I should've said-we don't have bannisters, so that 'plank' bit along the top kind of edges the stairs. We have no plans to change that at the moment, but you've made me think about it!

We used this company. They often do special offers.

That really bizarre! I emailed them and they've literally just emailed back - half the price!
Did they measure up first? I'm just a bit worried in case what I asked for doesn't fit, or the drawers won't be big enough.

I've just had something similar but more basic done, there was already a cupboard that faced the other side (hard to explain) so we had two more put in, took our carpenter a day and cost £300 plus materials.

dexterslockedintheshedagain · 07/10/2020 14:46

I feel a bit stupid now, thinking £3k was reasonable Blush

Sharps are overpriced! It's just ready made carcasses nothing special.

Titsinknicks · 07/10/2020 14:57

I've said before on here they quoted me circa £9k for some wardrobes and I ended up buying from IKEA for less than £300 and then chucked a guy £100 to fit them

Just get a few quotes from carpenters, most will charge a day rate plus materials.

We just paid £3500 for a new solid oak stair case with bannister and newel posts.

Thank you everyone! Your help has been invaluable. I knew I was on MN for a reason Wink

@notso:these look fab, pls can I ask for the contacts of your carpenter if you are in London or Midlands?
notso · 07/10/2020 18:58

@dexterslockedintheshedagain and @DespairingHomeowner
We used a local joiner/carpenter I forget the difference Blush
I'm in N.Wales, I can PM you his details if you want.
We had three quotes in total. Clever Closet and two local firms, CC was around £1700, one of the local guys £2300 although he used kitchen fittings and fronts so it would've been a lovely finish but it was more than we wanted to pay.

AliGJ · 01/06/2021 15:56

We tried to use Clever Closet and had a terrible experience.

After months of waiting for the booked installation date, they cancelled our order two days prior to installation on the basis that we did not own a private driveway. This issue was never mentioned before, we live in a terraced house in a city

In the months prior to the installation date, we liaised with Clever Closet to confirm that the area under our stairs was suitable for their product and arranged for our builders to break through and leave the cavity under the stairs ready for their installation (i.e. our hallway is incomplete and a waste pipe is exposed within the concrete floor). We are now left with a mess of a hallway and no way to resolve the situation immediately prior to our baby's delivery date.

Two days prior to installation, Clever Closet called us to say that they could not carry out the works because our house did not have a private driveway. We pointed out that the installers can park on the road outside our home (we offered to reserve two places immediately outside this with our and a friend's car for the days prior to installation to guarantee this). This would mean the installer would be less than 2m from our front door. In the alternative, we said the installers could use the whole of our ground floor as their workshop (it is still empty from the works that have just completed) or our rear garden to cut the product down to size.

We were told that none of this was acceptable to them and they could not install the product and would need to cancel our order.

This was never mentioned to us previously and has left us completely in the lurch, with a mess of a hallway and without any time to find an alternative contractor prior to our first child's arrival, due this week.

While they have agreed to refund our deposit, we have lost money dealing with this company, by carrying out prep work to the area under our stairs that now will not be filled in by them.
