Loo at the top of the stairs... anyone else?

We live in a Victorian house which has clearly been rearranged quite a fe times in its lifetime.
Annoyingly, it has a loo at the top of hte stairs. There's a door, obviously (!) but if it's left door open in which case first thing you see is a toilet, or door closed means the landing seems smaller and darker. It also doesn't have a sink in it, so you have to go to the main bathroom along the corridor to wash your hands.

Can't decide what to do with it. Can't remove it and extend the rooms either side of it as then the landing will lose windows. Vaguely considered removing it and making a sort of bench seat reading nook but think DH will think I've lost the plot!
Pinterest doesn't help me but I can't be the only old house with this set up?

Could you replace the door with a partially glazed period style (but still opaque!) door to let some light through when the door's closed? Or insert a glazed panel above the door?

I think they're called transom windows. Lots on pinterest anyway!

Yes, agree with PP on partially glazed obscured glass door, so that you can keep it closed but not lose light. We got a lovely period one off ebay for cheap!

Also I'd be surprised if you can't fit a tiny teeny basin in? Can you get a plumber to quote for install costs? You'll be able to source basin, tap and waste for under £150.

I think you'd be mad to remove it, extra bathrooms really add value!

I'd either put a basin in along with a half panel of obscured glass or get rid and put a plant or small bookcase there. I wouldn't have just a loo with no basin.

Sorry, locked myself out of MN...

So it has a semi opaque glass top door. Problem is it's quite see-through if you're on the loo, so it needs a thin blind over it as well. I don't think we can increase the amount of light into then landing very easily unless we changed the door for one with a horizontal glass panel at the top.

More interested in the 'don't get rid of it!' posts. One of the walls is a board wall that backs onto our wardrobe space so we could probably recess the basin slightly into that.

I just hate coming up the stairs to look directly at a toilet all the time. Nobody else is big on closing doors in this house...

If there's another toilet in the main bathroom, could you just not use this one and pretend the door is a window? Or if you want to use it but it's the door being left open which is the problem, get a self closing hinge.
