Hallway flooring

Currently renovating our Edwardian house. We have so many house outgoings including an upcoming kitchen extension that I'm trying to keep costs as low as possible. However the floor in the hallway really needs to be fixed. At the moment it's bare painted floorboards but they are in really bad condition and can't be restored. My dream is to have Victorian style tiles, I can buy the ones I need for around £250 but the quotes to fit them are around another £800 and I just think it's too much at the moment. So the option is to wait until we can afford it or another idea is to get vinyl flooring for around £180 which my fil could fit. Not sure if it looks a bit naff? First photo is tiles and second is vinyl. What do you think?

I like both. Why don't you have the vinyl and if you don't get on with it you can save up for the tiles long-term.

Thank you, that's a great idea.

Nora's nailed it, I think. Good vinyl doesn't look naff, and that one looks lovely. It's also very practical, and warmer. Do what they've done in that photo, and add a console table or similar as a focal point.

Floor would have to be absolutely level for the vinyl to look great.

You may well need to put plywood down first which will cost extra.

Whereabouts can you get those first tiles for £250? I'd have thought they would have been £1,000 +.

The tiles are forever. The plastic is for a photograph.

I am a bod get who does it on the cheap. Don’t be like me. If you can, save up and get the right thing.

Hmm having read the replies I'm now thinking of waiting for the tiles. I know they are what I want long term but literally everything needs doing in the house and it feels a bit of a luxury I suppose. I guess waiting until we have done our kitchen is a good idea so we have more of an idea of where we stand financially. I've contemplated trying to lay them myself - have tiled the fireplace and learnt other skills during this renovation- but feel ill mess it up and it will be an expensive mistake! I'm really embarrassed of the floor at the moment but I suppose that's just the reality of living in a renovation project.

These are the tiles in the photo. I've put an estimate of our hallway size in and it comes to £220

So really it comes down to cost of buying vinyl as a short term measure, or living with what you've got until you can get the tiles laid. How much do you hate the floorboards? Can you afford to "lose" the £180? If not, and you know the tiles are what you really want, then hang on. I'm not sure if I'd be brave enough to lay floor tiles myself, because they really have to be level. Of course you could just buy a cheap off cut of vinyl to tide you over. The danger of that is you never get round to replacing it!

It doesn’t answer your question OP but I had those tiles put in a couple of years ago and am really pleased with them.
