Nice holiday home only one bathroom

I know this sounds a bit precious and a first world problem but we are looking at buying a holiday home close to my DS and have found a lovely flat with amazing view etc but it only has one bathroom we currently have two. It's got three large double bedrooms and lovely big rooms but despite our best efforts due to the configuration of windows etc we cant see how you could put even another loo in let alone another bathroom (my DH is an architect so has really has tried all configurations). Would this put you off? I think it's because it's large enough to sleep 6 people that we're hesitating. I should add we're not looking at renting it out to others but we might invite friends to stay with us occasionally.

We are cash buyers what else do you do with your money?

This is where I despair. How ever did we get to the point where this kind of inequality can be so blithely accepted, with so little social conscience? You know, when people argued to downplay the role of the state in supporting society they did so on the basis that as those who were well off paid less tax they would obviously move towards supporting the less well off in other ways, through old fashioned patrician 'good works', charitable organisations, and doing their best to work for the benefit of others. That just hasn't happened, has it? Just a guilt- and responsibility-free money-grab.

And the idea that in the middle of a housing crisis that disadvantages millions of children across the country it seems to be perfectly socially acceptable for some families to have no shame about hoovering up the housing stock for pleasure while others have no access to a safe and secure place to stay is just unutterably depressing.

Communities need access to homes to remain viable. And if people not in the community buy them, they can't remain viable. I'm with Plaid Cymru on this:

I wouldn't buy it.

If it's for your holidays and you enjoy 2 bathrooms at home, when away having a treat weekend or holiday you want it to as good S home I'd better. If you like 2 bathrooms don't buy a home without them....it's irrelevant if other people do t care or if 1 bathroom is norm.

If it's in a holiday area and you may potentially let it, 2 bathrooms are a big selli g point and increase the potential market from a family with 2 small children to probably larger families or 2 small families or 2 couples.

1 bathroom was of course the norm. Many houses still have just 1 but all newer homes have 2 any many older ones are squeezing g N e fra loo or Ensuite in. This means that 2 loos at least is increasingly the norm. It isn't being princessy to say that's what you'd like....there are lots of 3 beds available with 2 loos.

No-one is saying it is terrible to only have 1 or a sign of a terrible house or poverty.....we all know there are loads of 3 bed I loo houses out there. But as time passes a bigger proportion of 3 bedders to have 2 loos so more and more more people will question if the 1 loo one is what they want.

There are always going to be people with more money than others. They choose to spend their money as they wish. Many have inherited money and others have worked hard at professional well paid jobs or sold businesses. I don’t feel I should apologise for being successful.

Regarding this second home. You could put a bathroom in the third bedroom as suggested. Have a bed settee in the lounge for occasional extra guests. But letting out with one bathroom will have limited appeal.

One loo not good OP. Occasionally people and guests greet poorly and the call of nature cannot wait. I wouldn’t buy I’m afraid.

Thank you all its been interesting reading peoples views on bathrooms Grin. We have just put an offer in on another one with smaller bedrooms but two bathrooms fingers crossed we are successful.

Im not sure why Im rising to your comments but I will.

  1. For the record I'm a part time public sector worker so pay tax via PAYE at the same rate as everyone else and my DH is a high rate tax payer again paid through PAYE. We pay tax at the rate set by the UK government we are not tax avoiders neither are we multi millionaires. The money was inherited our view is that we are lucky to get it, we never assumed we would inherit anything as nursing home bills etc are very high. But we have it and as said above we will choose to spend it how we want.
  2. Are you suggesting that we give all the the money to the disadvantaged? That would be incredibly philanthropic of us and we're simply not going to do that.
  3. Im not sure when our society has ever "through old fashioned patrician 'good works" has ever consistently helped and supported the disadvantaged it just doesn't happen.

It would be a deal breaker for me. For a 3 double bed house I would expect at least two toilets, if not 2 full bathrooms

Terrace58 · 30/09/2020 02:09

A few months back we stayed in a hotel suite with 2 bedrooms and 2 full baths, just DH, dd, and me. It was amazing. In the future we will always do that if it is a remotely feasible option. Having an extra shower to cycle people through post swim or coming in grungy before bed is so helpful and made the trip much more enjoyable.
