Stupid question re carpet!

Having never actually had carpet fitted before I have what is probably a silly question- I’m in the process of repainting the upstairs of my house and am planning to have the same neutral coloured carpet throughout including the hallway and stairs- Is there an advantage in waiting and having all the carpets done at the same time or can I go room by room? I assume they will be using different pieces of carpet in each room so there’d be a join regardless but not really sure! Would really like to get spare room carpeted straight away as the old floorboards are a mess and it may be a few months before I’ve decorated the other rooms.

We always do room by room, partly because of the issue of the room needing to be completely empty. Our carpets were fitted over the space of almost a year.

Carpets come in a few different Standard sizes from the manufacturer. If you had everything done at the same time they could probably use the least number of rolls of carpet to minimise wasted bits and costs. For example- we have just had two rooms done and were able to only order one piece to be used for that. If we had to do each room at a different times we would pay more as the dimensions mean we would have had to order two pieces (or store the extra from a larger roll ourselves until we were ready to do the second room but that isn’t a cost saving!)

I've bought carpet for everything and had it fitted in stages.
I only bought it at the same time because I wasn't sure if it was like wallpaper and could have differences in shade.
It normally is joined at each doorway under a threshold strip unless you have any massive rooms or mad shapes.
Still don't know if the colour varies Grin

Ooh, that’s a good point @TheQueef, I hadn’t thought about not getting an exact colour match! Did you just store the remaining bits at home until you were ready to have it fitted?

What PP said as well re colour variation- we bought wool carpets and were concerned about the same thing.

TheQueef · 27/09/2020 13:53

It wasn't too bad storing it because the bigger room was empty but I wouldn't buy the underlay in advance again!
I've since learnt that you can buy underlay much cheaper from EBay Blush
We've a loft and stored the stairs and landing carpet up there for six months with no ill effects.
(Pay no attention to colour matches I will prob be talking shite Grin)

It's likely to cost more for fitting, as one visit for the whole lot will take up less time than multiple visits.

Our fitter moves the furniture, it wasn't until I looked elsewhere that I found this isn't the norm!

FlowFlow7722 · 27/09/2020 14:01

I thought it was cheaper if you are paying for fitting to get as many rooms done as possible at one time...

Flamingolingo · 27/09/2020 14:05

I think batch variation is an issue - so we bought and paid for all of our carpet at the same time (in the sale, woo!) and the carpet company stored it for us. Just gave them a ring every time we wanted it. We had something like 150m^2 of carpet so wouldn’t have been able to store it here. Each piece was enormous!

eurochick · 27/09/2020 17:53

You can get small colour variation but that is unlikely to be an issue unless you are joining it together edge to edge (which you won't be for different rooms as there will be a door bar.

We waited until we were finished and bought a complete roll of carpet off the supplier and the fitters brought it with them and fitted the whole house in a day.
