What Outdoor to complement indoor?

Indoors we have a very dark wood herringbone floor, like a strong coffee colour.

4m wide glass doors look on to & open on to the patio. We plan to lay large Porcelain tiles suitable for outdoors, but what colour would match? And what style? Would grey be ok against the brown wood floor in kitchen? Or should I be looking for a different shade?

(Definitely going with Porcelian, don’t want decking, pvc or natural stone) But stuck on colour/shade

Tia

I would go for a buff/cotswold stone colour personally. I'm over grey.

Thanks. That would be too traditional for me. I currently have Indian sandstone flags which are a sort of browny/red. I’m over the traditional look & want to go large, square & modern. BUT can’t go too modern as my floor is dark wood.

Arghh! Opinions?

Anyone?!

I’ve got access to the terrace from 3 different rooms in the house and they have 2 types of flooring between them. The terrace is yet another type. I don’t think it matters too much unless you’re an absolute minimal purist. In which case, I’d probably consider sth mid-tone. Light might be too much of a contrast and dark might soak up too much light so I’d probably go with sth in the middle.

Have you tried Houzz for a bit of inspo?

SuperFairy · 24/09/2020 20:54

We have a really modern look with sawn sandstone in a very very light cream colour, 600x900 slabs with tiny gaps between, it looks great BUT when it’s sunny it’s a bloody nightmare! Our patio is 120 square metres and west facing. It’s sooooo bright you need sunglasses to even walk across it!
It looks absolutely beautiful but be careful not to go too light if you are west or south facing.

SuperFairy · 24/09/2020 20:55

I think milky coffee colour would look lovely.

What about wood effect porcelain tiles that match the inside?

Thank you for the suggestions, they’re great. The patio is 50m2 so I think wood effect would be overkill (plus indoor is real wood). It’s south facing so good point about not going too light!

I like the idea of a medium tone. Possibly a taupe or warm grey? Could this work?

Biggest sizes I’ve found are 120x60 or 80x80cm. Is there a reason you’d go with one over the other?

I’m a fan of taupe and other greiges.

When it comes to rectangular vs square tiles, it might depend on how you want to play with proportions and the shape of the terrace as you wouldn’t want to have to cut half the tiles.

Sunisshining12 · 25/09/2020 16:32

@JoJoSM2 good point. Been looking the past few hours for something warm grey/greige/Taupe - can’t find anything suitable! Arghh. Any suggestions please?

Maybe Ragno Realstone Rain? Porcelain which looks like limestone. Available in three colours including greige and taupe. Can get 20mm thick in 100cm x 50cm I think. Or in 11mm thick in even bigger sizes.

nomdeguerrrr · 25/09/2020 18:05

Just checked. The thinner ones you can get in 150cm x 75cm and 120 x 120cm

nomdeguerrrr · 25/09/2020 18:22

Oh. Sorry for all the posts. Given that it's 50m2, you might want to think about buying in Europe and getting them shipped. It is likely to work out much cheaper, even with the much higher shipping costs (takes a bit longer too). When I say cheaper, I mean thousands cheaper.

There are a number of sites you can do this through. I've used Tile Expert and found them very good. Might be worth using the advanced search on their website to see if you can find what you want as well.

Saz12 · 25/09/2020 18:41

If south facing then, nothing remotely shiny/sparkly, and not too dark (or it’ll be hot - fine if you’re always going to wear shoes, and not grow plants in pots....). Sadly I’ve no ideas as my budget is -erm- slightly different to yours!

Sunisshining12 · 25/09/2020 18:57

@nomdeguerrrr - thank you for the advice that is super. There’s actually another 60m2 worth of paving/other area as too so in total over 100m2. I’ll have a look through your suggestions now. Is 10-11mm ok to lay outdoors? The areas are quite sloped/ramped up & down. I’d ideally like the sizes to be as large as possible, for minimal joint lines?

@Saz12- Maybe you misread 50m2 as the budget? That was the size, certainly not my budget 😂 My budget is £25m2 to buy, but no idea if I’m delusional!

I may have also overestimated budget. The bigger the tile you go the more expensive they get. You might struggle to find ones as big as 120cm x 60cm x 2cm for £25 m2.

The ones 20mm thick are stronger than the thinner ones. The thinner ones used for inside would probably be okay but you'd need to treat them a bit more gently. I wouldn't drive a car onto them or put a trampoline on them or anything.

Sunisshining12 · 25/09/2020 19:38

@nomdeguerrrr - thanks, I’ll see what I can find & how much they’re at. I’ll stick to 20mm then
