Is the market slowing?

I'm looking in the Yorkshire Dales and for the last 2 months things have been crazy. In the last week or 2, less so. There are far fewer properties coming on and half of the 'new' properties are actually price reductions. Is anyone else finding this?

I've noticed this near us too. We're FTB and keeping an eye on the market until we can get to see a mortgage broker in the next few weeks. Things certainly seem to be staying on the market longer than they were in the summer.

Hugely in our area. There was a big boom over summer. Very little going up in our budget at the mo.. the lower end of the market is still quite buoyant but 200-400,000 is very slow.

Yes, I'm in Scotland and it's finally starting to slow down a little. Since lockdown ended pretty much every decent property that came on has went to final offers / closing date.

Yes, it’s slowing in Devon. A lot of people were running around trying to buy in summer, and they’ve suddenly looked at schools etc and realised what they’re letting themselves in for. I think there was a lot of summer fantasy going on, and they’re waking up to the reality of what the countryside is actually like 6 months of the year. Lots of houses were slapped on the market for v excitable prices but there’s been a reality check.

I've noticed lots of properties that were under offer back on the market. I live rural looking for somewhere else rural. I think people have possibly had a sharp reality check. Many rural areas have poor broadband and no services. There seems to be a lot of people with a dream of living in the countryside that have took their rose tinted glasses off.

I thought the same two weeks ago, but it has exploded again. Is it the thought of another lockdown?

I did a search with the "Include SSTC" and was astounded with the number of recent houses gone under offer.

Sammilouwho · 23/09/2020 14:34

Yes! We've just out ours on the market and we have quite a few viewings booked in but we can't find any houses to look at.
My sister as a FTB has just had her mortgage in principle changed (they first offered it her at 10% and have now said 15% or no mortgage), so yeah the housing market is hard at the minute.
I've had to set up instant alerts in case anything goes up in our preferred area - Yorkshire

There seems to be a lot of people with a dream of living in the countryside that have took their rose tinted glasses off.
My parents moved to West Wales in the late 1970s. They were there for 20 years until my dad died. My mum was always commenting on how many incomers (and oddballs) there were, who were looking for the good life (after watching Tom and Barbara!), stuck it two or three years, and then left, as it wasn't as they thought!

Yes the flurry has ground to a halt where we are - semi-rural but commutable to London. Absolutely nothing new coming on and things starting to be reduced.

Bouncycastle12 · 23/09/2020 14:49

I think people all thought they would be working from home and scarpering from London forever more, and then realised that while this winter may be crap, bosses are going to be trying to get people back to the offices and best not to make massive decisions until they can see how it plays out. I think a couple of Devon sales have fallen through because people suddenly realised they couldn’t sell at the price they wanted in London either.

imnotimportant · 23/09/2020 14:53

Very busy here ( se ) but difficult as you need to be stc to be given a viewing with most agents

Sitdowncupoftea · 23/09/2020 15:39

I think this issue with most rural properties is poor flakey broadband. Its not suitable for any WFH. The next village to me have had no Internet for over a fortnight due to some issue. We also get loads of power cuts. I'm use to it but we often have people move here and last a year. A lot of rural properties are being snapped up yet these people moving from towns don't realise its not just a nice looking house in a village that matters. We have no pavements, no bus service , no school or shops. I like it but I'm the outdoor type , mud and muck doesn't bother me. People usually move due to the broadband issues.
