FTB buying a house from a divorcing couple - is it weird if we ask for furniture they don't want?

Just that, really. I thought that if they were getting rid of things like the fridge, lightshades etc then I'm sure we'd be happy to take them rather than them getting thrown away. But is it really vulture-like? We want your house + your furniture?

If we did ask, should it be an informal request through the estate agent or formal through our solicitor?

We didn’t ask for it but received some really good quality furniture and appliances from the previous owner who was moving quite far so transport cost was too high. We are still using nearly all of it. Ask them!

We left king size bed, washing machine, a wardrobe, trampoline, bedside tables, dining table and a few other bits when we moved last time.

The buyer was a first fine buyer with a little boy and clearly stretched for cash. We'd got married the year before and had money set aside from gifts for a new bed, family dining table and a few other things. The trampoline was a small one and my DPs had offered DD a big new one in huge new garden. We didn't charge, buyer was delighted not to have to worry about a lot of furnishings and it made our move (same road!) much easier. Just had a few days of no appliances but I wasn't doing laundry the first few days anyway!

All I did was email the estate agent with a list and ask them to email it to the buyer.
