How much should a moving company be charging?

What would you consider an average or reasonable cost for two professional removal men to move a small one bedroom flat with average amount of furniture within London, just 2 miles between place moving from and place moving to? It’s an average amount of furniture incl bed, dining table etc, but no white goods.

Been quoted everywhere from £253 to £900

A couple of years ago in London, 3 mile movement we were charged £1300 for a four bed house: furniture and a fridge but no other white goods. That should give you some idea.

Mirrorxx · 21/09/2020 13:24

I have just had our first quote to move about 5 miles but a 3 bedroom house. 500 plus packing costs

Trying2Heal · 21/09/2020 13:34

@AllTheWhoresOfMalta @Mirrorxx

Thanks. That gives me a reference report. So it seems given it's only a 1 bed flat I shouldn't be paying anymore than around £500

When I moved a 1 bed flat in the outskirts of London (admittedly to a property 20 miles away) I was charged about £650.

Unfortunately, if it's a property sale, there's a good chance it will take all day, so they quote it as such. Because there's no certainty of time of completion they can't book two jobs in on one day for the same crew, so you're paying for a whole day, even if ultimately they finish by lunchtime.

Catsarelush · 21/09/2020 16:23

I paid £600 for similar (not London.)

passthemustard · 21/09/2020 17:14

I moved a 3 bed house 200 miles, two years ago and only paid 1500!

BeBraveAndBeKind · 21/09/2020 17:20

Definitely make sure you have them out to assess beforehand though and read reviews. We had to find someone quick after our completion date changed, they quoted over the phone, sent two (useless) lads and the whole thing was a fucking nightmare. I wish I'd paid a bit more and got someone competent to do it.

@DistinguishedCarrot. What do you mean when you say "if it's a property sale"?

PeachandBee · 21/09/2020 17:51

We've had 5 quotes back for moving a large 3 bed 3 miles including a packing service and they're all fairly similar £1100- £1400. £900 for a one bed seems a little steep!

Sorry - just meant that if you're buying and selling a house, rather than moving from one rental to another. If you're buying and selling you're at the mercy of the solicitors and mortgage companies. Your flat could be emptied and in the back of a van by 9am but the actual money transfer and completion might not happen until as late as 4/5pm, in which case they're just sitting around waiting for the day.

I have used a site called comparerethemanwithvan twice for similiar moves—less furniture, but around 150 each time. In both cases was cheapest quote available and medium can, also with us helping with move. So yours would be move, but I shouldn’t imagine much more than twice that?

Ypsilanti · 21/09/2020 19:12

I moved 3 miles in London recently (from a 2 bed house to a 2 bed house) and paid £600. My removal guys are amazing (this was the 4th time I’d used them). Won’t post the name on here in case it’s seen as advertising, but feel free to send me a message.

Trying2Heal · 21/09/2020 19:28

@DistinguishedCarrot

Thanks. No I'm not selling/buying so there will be no waiting around.

@Ypsilanti. I would love to get their name, thanks. I've never sent a message on here before but I will try to do so now.

We moved from a one bed flat to a house 100 miles away. The quotes ranged from £400 to nearly £3000 - the disparity seemed totally insane! We took a chance on the cheapest one and they were fine Grin

Trying2Heal · 22/09/2020 07:15

@ChalkDinosaur

Awesome. There's no point throwing money away, right?

Whoever you use, be sure to check their insurance cover. BAR registered removers will be more expensive but give you guaranteed cover levels and a complaints procedure if something goes wrong.

"Man with van" types businesses can be a bit more hit and miss. I have a colleague who used someone and a couple of her boxes never materialised and a number of items of furniture were damaged. She didn't get anywhere with her complaints either. On the other hand my dp used one when we moved in together and they were great.

Check reviews and recommendations and perhaps ask on a local Facebook group if you're a member of any.
