Moving to Bristol

Help! My partner lives in Bristol and I'm looking to move down there. He currently lives in Shirehampton. I have a teenage daughter (13).

Can anyone recommend areas of Bristol we could move to?

What kind of area are you more comfortable with? Urban, suburban, rural village? How far from Shirehampton do you want to be? What is your budget?
Bristol is an amazing city, but secondary schools are very hit and miss!

What type of property do you like?

Are you looking to rent or buy? And then what is your budget?
Whereabouts would you / your partner be working - city centre or elsewhere? Would you need parking or will you be using public transport? Bristol can get very congested with traffic and some public transport options aren't great.
For an in-year secondary school place you would need to find out which schools have places available. Many schools would have waiting lists but Bristol City council are used to families moving in and out of the area.

We'll be renting initially, my daughter and I. I don't mind especially if it's rural or urban but doubt I can afford very expensive areas. I might have a job in Bedminster and need to make sure my daughter is in a catchment area for a decent enough school. Good transport links would be nice but cost is probably the biggest thing

Bristol is a county as well as a city and doesn't really have any rural areas. It's surrounded by 3 other small authorities.

North Somerset
South Gloucestershire
Bath and North East Somerset.

Each has their own education departments but lots of children, particularly secondary age go to school in a different one to the one they live. You also pay council tax accordingly too. Some parts of Kingswood, for example, have the county boundary running down the middle of a street.

I’d start with schools and work out from there. As you’d expect the best schools are in the most expensive areas so you might be better looking out of the city at eg Portishead

I used to live in Redland and absolutely loved it, but we were renting and could never have afforded to buy there. My partner and I were within cycling distance of our workplaces so traffic wasn’t an issue. It’s a fabulous area though.

What can you spend on a house buying and mortgage?
