Reading or Slough?

Hi, currently living in Croydon and looking to sell. We are in two minds staying here and thinking of going further out to get more for our money. So I’m near family in West Country but still working in London I’m considering reading though a family mentioned slough being better. Just wondering peoples thoughts from those areas and which parts to avoid. Moving from Croydon which is mostly gloom I can’t imagine it being worse? 😀 Our budget is £430k for 3 bed

Another Reading resident here. Look at Caversham and Tilehurst. Both have some nice areas and easily commutable to London and the Town centre.
Both much better options than Slough.

I’d also say Caversham, Woodley and maybe Spencer’s Wood?

Waving back ImNotWhoYouThinkIam !

Didnt realise there were so many locals here. Wonder how many times we’ve all been near each other!

There are some lovely parts of Reading and surrounding areas. Each little village or town will have nice and not so nice parts. Perhaps come down and have a look if you can and see what you think?

(And if you like playing netball do let me know, we need some new players for next season!) Wink

Reading definitely has much more going on, bracknell is ok but dull good for family housing but that doesn't seem your priority, also Woodley , Slough awful..

IToldYouIWasFreaky · 12/09/2020 13:05

But I live in one if the supposedly shit areas, and love it!

Haha, snap! I am also a Dinger born and bred...wonder if we went to the same school?

Another Reading-ite here!
Definitely not Slough, and Bracknell doesn’t have much going on either.
Wokingham is quite nice. But yeah - id choose Reading if I were you!

Maybe! Although I grew up in Caversham. My school started with H, not the Catholic one!

I’m so pleased Reading has been most have suggested, now onto Tilehurst, As it’s more west reading I was told to avoid! Which parts of Tilehurst are ok? I think south lakes might be a push as ideally like to be nearer to main reading station. I do like idea of Caversham.

Reading is brilliant. I grew up in snooty Wokingham, which is where I'm also currently residing, if I could have then I would have chosen Reading, when I moved. For logistical reasons it wasn't possible.

Haven't visited Slough since I worked there, was never a huge fan and it just felt like a London suburb. Bracknell has really gentrified itself, but I love visiting it, purely because it's got better shops and is more accessible than Wokingham is for me (disabled). Reading has the best train links where as Wokingham and Bracknell are just Waterloo or Gatwick lines.

Reading is getting some interesting rejuvenation into the Broad Street Mall soon, I believe. I think there's going to be some sort of bowling and activity complex built inside where TK Maxx was. Or so I read.

I’m a West Reading resident. The only area to ‘avoid’ this side would be around Dee Road/Lyndhurst Road. Around Tilehurst Village is lovely, and to be honest 90% of Tilehurst is too.

Umm iLoveFlumps wondering if I am on the same team as you to played against you although I’m a veteran as old (in my 40’s)

There are some gorgeous new houses by the football stadium where the new train station will be but they are expensive. Which I think is hilarious as they are basically in ‘south Reading’ which is the posh term for Whitley and Whitley wood. Both areas that I moved out of as soon as I could.

Lived on a road called Northumberland avenue and had my house broken in to and car broken into so many times. Had buggies and car seats stolen one time!!

Then moved up the hill to university area and a lovely tree lined street. I was working at the hospital and could walk to work. Stopped working for the nhs and moved area for schools for the children as woodley and Wokingham have good schools.
