We need an old fireplace removed, the gap made good, the stove installed. Anyone done this? Is it expensive? Messy?

Why’s it a pita? It just sits there. Easy to clean, you pull a drawer out, tip it into a bin bag, shove it back in. Get the chimneys swept once a year. Use it as and when you please.

Just moved into a house with one. Not sure I'll ever even use it.

It's a fortune and so much hassle. I'd be inclined to rip out the fireplace, paint and leave the cavity, put some sort of wood beam over the top

Hyperfish101 · 08/09/2020 22:21

Yes think I will do that. We don’t need the heat. It’s a small room and I have been really surprised at how nice many of the electric stoves are.

We are taking out our old fireplace and replacing it with a gas fire like the one attached. The whole removal, installation and plastering will be just over 2k.

Stoves look lovely but they seem to be a bit of a hassle and I think one just wouldn’t work in this property.

Everyone I know with a stove has wood burners but I do love my gas stove. It looks the same, but you can turn it on and off instantly and there's no mess and almost no maintenance. I'll be installing a similar one when I move house. Gas all the way for me!

The everhot one looks good. My mother has an everhot cooler and loves it.
I have a country kiln wood burner which is great. A builder lined the chimney and dp did the fireplace and dB fitted the stove, it was inspected by building control as part of the renovations.
I burn the equivalent of £70 of logs a fortnight which I’m given but if I wasn’t I’d consider an electric stove

It's a very expensive way of filling up a hole.

I love them, for the country, where we don't have to consider pollution so much and there's loads of room to manage the wood (it's more work than you would think, even if you buying it in).

I would save your money and fill it with twiggy shit also.

Bluntness100 · 11/09/2020 14:55

Agree on the comments on the wood. It is expensive and you need space to store it and keep it dry, many properties don’t have a wood store or the space to build one.

Wood burners go through a lot of wood, and if you’re not self sufficient then depending on how often you use it, then you could be looking at a bill of 100 odd pounds a month during winter, if not more.
