Removing wall into conservatory

We have a small lean to conservatory on the kitchen, with a half brick wall and a glass roof. We would like to knock through the current doorway into a double doorway size, and block up the existing window, to make it a more useable space that flows better.

I am aware that you need building regs if you do not have an external grade door into the conservatory; but what do you actually need to do to pass building regs, and is it worth it?

I’ve got a similar setup in that I’ve got a conservatory on the back of my kitchen, with double width opening. In winter the conservatory is really cold, summer it’s the opposite and it’s been ridiculously hot a few weeks back. I wouldn’t want to lose the doors.

If you knock through/open up I’d be worried about bringing those temperatures into the house. Maybe your conservatory is different?

We are in the process of adding something similar onto a house. How old is the conservatory and do you have the details of the ground works that were done at the time? What level of insulation is the glass roof? we were given a level of insulation, but from memory cannot recall what the readings were.

We've been advised that to remove the doors into the house, we need deeper foundations and a better damp course. Also better glass insulation than the cheaper, plastic types.

Could you contact the company that installed the conservatory originally for advice?

It's about ten years old and I don't even think I could remember the company. It's not very big and doesn't seem to have the extremes of temperature that people complain about with conservatories, so I'm happy that it's what I would like to do...if it's allowed.

if it's allowed

Well you can pretty much do as you want with regard to regs (as long as it’s not impacting anyone else) but it may come back to bite you if/when you want to move.

I think conservatories are generally thought of as “outside” space and not upto the proper standards.
