Hi, We are planning to have fitted wardrobes. Few options.

  1. Ikea
  2. Sharps, Hammonds
  3. Bespoke carpenter made

Our builder is a professional carpenter and has convinced us to go with 3) and has convinced us that the bespoke wardrobes will be durable economical etc; using MDF instead of chipboard.
The full height (floor to ceiling) we have is 230cm x 80 cm (width) each double wardrobe. I have taken designs and quotation from Sharps. They are obviously charging a bomb.

Question:
Sharps design has single full height doors (230cm), whereas my carpenter/ builder suggesting to have two part doors, 180 (bottom part) + 50cm (top part). His logic is that
a) having tall doors is not good, as the hinges may break and the door could fall due to frequent use.
b) the top shelves will not be frequently used, hence to access that better to have separate small doors on the top.

When I see designs of modern wardrobes most have single full height doors.

So we have a design dilemma here. Any thoughts MN???

If you can afford it I'd go with bespoke however, these would stay with the house if you move? We bought ours from Habitat and whilst its survived one move I doubt it will survive storage and another. I like the idea of top cupboards!

Our fitted cupboards are normal door + smaller top door. The normal doors house everyday stuff within easy reach. The top doors house once-in-a-while stuff like suitcases or beach and camping equipment (I suppose you could also put out-of-season clothes up there, too).
