Anyone converted a loft with a height of 1.8m?

We would like to convert our loft but only have a head height of 1.8m in the centre of the room. We have high ceilings but not high enough to drop them the required amount.

I’m just wondering if anyone has been in a similar position and successful managed to convert the loft? What was your solution and how much more did it cost?

Either you need to drop the floor or raise the ceiling if possible. Costly if possible but not sure of exact numbers as have no direct experience.

If you want it to be a habitable room, i.e. a bedroom or living room, and not just a storage room, you generally need a minimum of 2.1m for at least 50% of the floor area, though this will feel very cramped. Standard ceiling heights are 2.4m plus. You will also need a proper stairs with a ceiling height at the top landing of at least 2m - this is building regs and non negotiable.

I assume your measured height of 1.8m is measured from the top of the floor joists to the underside of the roof's ridge beam? In which case, remember that you have to allow for both floor finish & insulation thickness and ceiling board/ insulation thickness, so in reality the available space is quite a bit less than 1.8m unless the floors are dropped (which will make the lower floor rooms feel more cramped) or you raise the roof, which is both a planning consideration and a total ball ache in terms of cost and disruption.

I would recommend getting an architect or specialist attic conversion builder around to have a look at it.
