Double Glazing Quotes

Looking to get six windows replaced, and I appreciate that you cannot see my windows, but I’m looking at a rough idea of what this should cost.

I’m in the South East, but not London and I’m sick of the bastard sales technique and ridiculous prices for what is essentially six standard windows. I was quoted £11k for windows which seems extortionate for a house that I’m also planning to sell in 18 months.

In 2017 I had my 4 bed detached house in Reading done. £9,300 all in, inc VAT, for 14 windows (mix of single, double, triple and quad windows and new front door. Super job. Look for a local company with recommendations.

Reese123 · 15/08/2020 11:35

@bungleofwimbledon they are called swift windows based in caterham they fitted my new front door 2 years ago, they didn’t do such a great job on the windows - there was quite a bit of fixing to the walls required but I suppose that’s to be expected

Mintjulia · 15/08/2020 11:43

Wow. Try MRB Windows, Newbury I think.

I had 10 double width windows (about 1m square) and 1 single width replaced for £4,400.

All triple AAA rated, been in two years now, all fine.

I know it’s two years ago but that price cannot have quadrupled in 2 years.

You need to try small independent businesses.
I use a small independent business. The owner and 2 employees. Always. EST in price, and does an excellent job. All his work comes from recommendations and it can be a bit of a wait to get the work done sometimes as he is so busy.
Best of all, these small businesses don’t do a long sales pitch, they literally come in, ask you what you want (answer any question of course), measure up, give you a price and then go.

Anyway businesses that employees a ‘sales person’ I try and avoid.

What area of the south east are you in?

starlingsintheslipstream · 15/08/2020 11:58

We are hoping to replace some this year - dreading the quote charade. If you're replacing single-glazed windows you might be eligible for the Government's Green Homes Grant scheme which starts next month. No good for us as we are replacing old double-glazing.

LizzieMacQueen · 15/08/2020 12:09

The £11,000 quote will be so they can miraculously offer you a whopping 40% off or something, when you're hesitant to sign. Is it one of the big companies? You need a craftsman not a salesman.

bookgirl1982 · 15/08/2020 14:23

We paid £4K for 11 windows a couple of years ago (Kent) - small local company not a high street name.

BungleofWimbledon · 15/08/2020 22:37

Thanks all. I’m in Essex. I cannot stand the long drawn out sales tactics, does this actually inspire anyone to purchase windows?

Miraculously, after refusing their almost £11k quote, a 40% discount was offered which I also refused.i then got an email from the ‘manager’ with a price just shy of £3.5k which is much more reasonable.

What has infuriated me during the whole process is the over inflated prices, the sales technique whereby I was asked twice to rebook my quote for when my husband was available (pissed me right off), and the inability to be straightforward. So frustrating.

It would actively inspire me to not buy from that company - any purchase actively supports sexist and poor sales practices.

To be fair, this tens to work the other way too, ie, they wouldn't want to quote without a female dp present either. It's so you can't turn round and say "I can't make a decision now, I need to ask my partner". Just high-pressure sales techniques.
