Wooden exterior doors

It's a period house, so I don't want composite or pvc, and the threshold needs to be flat so a wheelchair user can get in without help.

Have you used a company which supplies proper wooden front or back doors?

Any thoughts/experience about using a reclaimed exterior door?

Would love to see pictures!

There are companies that do this such as the London Door company (v pricey), you will find others if you google “period front door”.

I believe some MNers have got a local joiner to make a front door, often for quite a lot less than the companies quote. So you could try that route.

I doubt a reclaimed door would work as they are generally made to fit a raised threshold (all period houses I have seen have got one) so would be too short for your purposes. You might be able to add a strip to the bottom but it’s not ideal as may crack there over time.

We got a quote of £2300 for a handmade hardwood door, mostly glazing, with new threshold and surround, fully fitted. Not including door furniture.

Softwood was cheaper.

It was from a local joiner who has a good name for working with period houses. We asked about reclaimed and he sucked his teeth and said we could and he'd fit it but it was hard getting doors that aren't warped etc and there's usually a good reason they are reclaimed. Another joiner friend confirmed that. He said it's OK for internal doors if you get decent reclaimed. But for your average front door better to go new.
