Can I ask to buy the previous buyers survey?

We are in the process of buying a house and are about to get the survey done.

The house previously has another buyer but their sale fell through and they had a change of circumstances so they decided topull out. They had already done the survey though, so I was wondering is there any reason I can’t ask them to sell me the survey they had done? I would probably offer them half the price they paid.

My thinking is that they have no use for it and half the money better than no money? I know that they used the estate agents recommended surveyor as would I so would trust the report.

Thanks

We’ve just received our survey yesterday.

It specifically says it’s only for the person who paid for it - us.

If someone came along and offered to pay half what we had to pay I’d tell them where to go.

OP, surely you factored in the cost of a survey when you decided to buy a house?

Why would you say no? You could get half your money back at literally zero cost to yourself.

I'd sell mine in a heartbeat, it's not like you need it anymore but the extra cash is handy!

I wasn’t offered half my money back. It wasn’t even a third. Plus it contravened the terms and conditions of the survey that I willingly signed.

But ANY money is money you wouldn't otherwise have, and why wouldn't you want to save the next family money? It makes zero sense to not pass it on.

Obviously the next person then needs to know they can't ever claim against the surveyor but otherwise there's literally no harm in helping people.

Do you also refuse to recycle clothes so no one else can benefit?

For the last time - the T&Cs I willingly signed precluded me from selling the survey I commissioned.

And why on earth would I want to save a buyer money who hasn’t bothered to budget for the cost of their own survey?

Ask the estate agent if it showed up any problems. It is usual to share it with both sides and if the EA is aware of a problem he should share it with you.

When spending hundreds of thousands of pounds of my hard earned cash, I’d be getting my own survey done, rather than relying on the word of an estate agent that the house had no issues.

Completely agree. The EA for the property I pulled out of said he stood by the blurb he’d written which said the seller had taken professional advice and was told the basement kitchen didn’t need tanking. I got my own damp specialist in who showed me the readings on his meter and said the entire basement was wet through.

I understood what you said, it just made zero logic and is a classic case of 'cutting your nose off to spite your face'.

You clearly didn’t understand. Just because you’d be happy to breach the terms and conditions in a contract you willingly signed up to so you can put a few quid in your pocket doesn’t mean everyone is the same

I did understand that you didn't want to breach the contract. What you failed to do was explain why. Fortunately, I no longer care for the answer.

Likewise. Goodbye
