What colour should I paint my kitchen and must the diner bit be the same colour?

It's just been refitted and I need to get the painting done before the plate rack is hung and I can't decide what to go for.

As you can see it's currently red and I'd like to leave the diner bit red as I love it. However, I'm not sure I like the red next to the units and sink and was thinking of something more neutra/mushroomyl there. Would that look stupid? There's a large freestanding fridge opposite the units which has red above and behind and I really don't want to move that to repaint tbh

So two questions - can the room be two colours and if so any suggestions for the lighter one at kitchen end? Thanks!

I really, really wouldn't do two different colours. When we bought our house, the kitchen diner had 2 different colours- with a big line down the middle of the wall both sides - and it was so, so awful. The room looks a hundred times brighter and more modern painted as one.

I can see what you mean about the red not going well with the units, sorry. Can you find a brighter/not completely neutral colour for the whole room that goes? I’d like a green personally but if you’re more of a warm colour person then maybe a mustardy yellow or a “millennial pink”?

FlamedToACrisp · 06/08/2020 22:24

I don't doubt it would be a pain, but I honestly think "it would be a nuisance to move the fridge" isn't a good way of choosing your decor! What about a different red, perhaps more of a terracotta?

Cute cat btw.

FlamedToACrisp · 06/08/2020 22:25

How about painting the tiles white?

Butterflykiss00 · 06/08/2020 22:28

I'm so sorry to say this but the red doesn't look good in either rooms. I would suggest Jurassic stone colour by dulux I think or a neutral colour to allow the kitchen to be the main focus

Butterflykiss00 · 06/08/2020 22:29

If you really really don't want to move the fridge paint round it

Butterflykiss00 · 06/08/2020 22:30

I meant the colour doesn't look good in either rooms. So sorry but it's my opinion . I'm also no good with bright colours

YorkshirePud1 · 06/08/2020 22:46

I agree, personally I don't think it's a nice shade of red and would repaint the lot a lighter colour that fits in with the kitchen more. I'm not sure how you could keep the dining room red and change the colour in the kitchen either - I think it would look odd. Sorry :( Could you add splashes of colour in the dining room instead? i.e. the furniture/furnishings/accessories.

Oh, I knew I'd get lots of comments from people not liking the red Smile. I know I did ask but... I love it glows so nicely with the sun, which the room gets lots of, or with fairy lights. But I don't like it with the units, no.

I was thinking of greenish greys but think it would be hard to get one that didn't just clash with the units/dresser. I've also looked at F&B Picture Gallery red for a softer one because I do like strong colours.

What about a darker red?

If you look at Bronze Red on the Little Greene website, it seems to go well with mushroom or grey.

I don’t think one of the grey-greens like F&B Mizzle / French Grey / Pigeon would clash with anything in the room but of course you would need to test it. We have Cooking Apple Green in our hallway which is nicely warm (but not grey).

In the reds, F&B Crimson Red would probably look good with the grey. I do like Picture Gallery Red but I suspect it will feel quite dark when it’s up compared to your current colour.

StormzyinaTCup · 07/08/2020 07:38

What about a deep pink, like a Raspberry pink if you like bright colours. Not sure I would do it all in that colour but you could do Raspberry in the kitchen and a grey in the diner?

Venture down the Pinterest rabbit hole and see what grabs you.

AlwaysLatte · 07/08/2020 07:58

Why didn't they tile up to the frame and instead left a gap? That would drive me loopy! I agree on the colour, definitely wouldn't have two.

JAMBF · 07/08/2020 08:21

Why not paint everything in white, or perhaps all in white with a wall painted in a different (but light) colour? It would make the room looks a lot more bigger. It’s also easier to decorate as you wish when walls are white.

PigletJohn · 07/08/2020 16:32

if you happen to like red, you can paint one or more walls is red for continuity, and the other walls at the kitchen end a different colour.

Fashions in paint colour are changed every year by the paint manufacturers

PigletJohn · 07/08/2020 16:33

p.s.

I think Raspberry must be going out of fashion because I just bought some reduced to half price.

Cottipus · 07/08/2020 19:59

I would look at the Cashmere shades as I think they would tone nicely with mushroom shades.

If you like strong shades the navy/charcoal would go well.

I think the issue is that shade of red clashes with the tiles and your new cabinets. I think repaint the entire room in a red which compliments the tiles, cabinets and worktops. Or repaint all walls in a more neutral shade and leave one wall in the dining area in the red as a feature wall. I think that’s the only way of keeping the red.
