I'm having my kitchen redone and am currently choosing between two options. Which would you choose and why?

Because of the nature of my kitchen, in order to have a decent sized island, it would need be positioned as shown in the diagrams I've drawn below. Otherwise I would have to have a peninsula bar similar to what I had before and I hated that!

These rough mockups by me are based on sketches provided.

Option 1 - Hob is on the island facing the bifold doors, however my back would be to the wall to the dining room. There will be an arch, so it won't be too visible (if at all visible) that my back is too them.

Option 2 - Hob is at the top of the island.
I have concrete floor so it will need digging up to move the water pump and having the sink in this position means there'd be no splashback...

The photo attached is the best example of what an island would look like positioned in a kitchen with units on the wall as mine would be

The doors in my mock ups would be bifold - covering the length of the wall!
I just couldn't find bifolds on my drawing tool

Re plan 1. Back to dining room won't be too much of a problem if you are cooking first, then eating together surely? Most people aren't still cooking when guests are sat down. View outside is nice when cooking .

In both the island looks to be a bit far away from rest of kitchen?

Re plan 2 . Clever idea to have sink on end as gives good work space on rest of island . Means cooking is on a wall do extractor can vent straight out? Might be more efficient like this?

Re doors to garden, are there any windows too? Incase you want to just let some air in without having to open doors up?

I'm hoping to have a window and doors in my kitchen design so I can open just the top window if I burn the toast. ( booked OnePlan for next week and I'm well excited!) maybe you should think about booking a designer too? You'll get more than two layouts from her.

Did I misread this. Just seen that hob is at top of island in two? I though you said it was sink? Or are both in there?
Sorry I'm confused now!

If plan 2, where would dishwasher go? Also will there be a dish drying area on the island? While plan 2 looks nice, I do not think it would be convenient to have that sink at the end, as when you are using island as your preparation area, you then need to go around to your hobs (if it makes sense??)

I personally would prefer 1st plan. You have preparation and cooking area on island (I can vividly imagine hot pancakes going straight on the plates Grin ). I would move sink (that is against the bottom wall) somewhere to the left - imagine turning to the right with that said pan and walking straight to sink + dishwasher.

If you have access to this kitchen I would suggest getting painters tape and mark on the ground the outline of your kitchen, and then pretend to cook Smile

Could you have a square island instead? And hob on the sink side. Still lots of workspace

Sorry I wrote this while half asleep!

Option 1 - Hob is on island.
Option 2 - Sink is at the top of island.

There were no windows, just bifolds but you've made a good point there about having the safety of a window in case something is burning without having to open the doors.

RE space - my drawings are awful, clearly (lol) - they are loosely based on sketches by a designer. The gap between the island and the units wouldn't be so big

No, my kitchen is pretty narrow so there wouldn't be enough space around it - kitchen companies often recommend 1000m distance

Thanks for this! COuld you clarify what you mean by somewhere to the left?

The left wall isn't an option I'm afraid structurally

@themummyway

In red is the sink and in light blue is the dishes drying area. I would say the dishwasher underneath the sink?

Basically the idea is that you can turn with used pan/pot and put it into sink/dishwasher without walking too far.

Oh, I would love an island, but my kitchen is too small for that :)

P.S. Apologies for messy marks - I'm using touch pad Blush
