Kitchen worktops - laminate / compact laminate / granite?

Hello - looking at a new kitchen worktop at the moment - lots of choice and not sure which to go for - we are thinking to go plain matt white, with no patterns or anything, and no gloss finish.

Want something sturdy and hygienic, easy to wipe clean and importantly durable so won't be easily scratched or dented.

Does anyone recommend a particular material - and also the best place to buy from? Hearing ropey things about B&Q quality.

thank you!

Do you have a budget op because there is a huge difference in cost between laminate and granite.

Silestone is a quartz-based product and very durable. I have the polished finish and 5 years on, it looks as good as new with no special treatment required. I just wipe it down.

As Bluntness says - there’s a massive price difference! I’m also doing my kitchen and granite was coming in at over £300 per square metre as opposed to laminate at around £40. I’ve always had Ikea laminate counters in previous kitchens and can say only good things about them.

Also silestone/Corina/quartz can be just as expensive as granite.

I would look at some finishes op and get them priced up, but depending on your kitchen size there can be a few grand price difference between laminate and a stone work top

thanks all so far - I would say we are on budget for laminate, not looking to get anything too expensive.

Looking at laminate on various websites and reviews are not looking good.

B&Q - has what we want looks wise but the reviews are disappointing.

Ikea - we've heard bad things but thanks for your comment as its made us look again - do you recommend their quality?

Just don't want it to be scuffed or damaged easily thats the main concern.

Looking at Homebase and there is such a wide range of models, no idea which is best and they have no reviews!

Look at DIY Kitchens. Very good quality. Look at reviews here on Mumsnet.
