Replacement rubber ring for a bath plug

My DS was being given a bath my by DH who did not notice that DS was playing with the bath plug and gave the rubber seal it's final rip that broke it apart (it was already in a worn state.)

This was last week. I've since contacted a few plumbing companies who have been unable to help me find either a replacement rubber or a replacement whole bath stop.

Can anyone recommend to me how I go about finding a replacement. I'm in the UK and happy to pay for postage from the UK....

I really just want to give DS (age 4) a bath! (looks like it will be showers and pouring a jug of water for now but he has eczema and needs to soak in emollient from time to time to keep his skin in a okay state...)

Oh I forgot to mention, I did have a look at ebay, amazon and b&q and couldn't find or couldn't tell if any would fit. (looking at reviews on amazon, though, it's important to get one with a 1mm sticking out bit otherwise it won't "engage"....)

If you're able to get to a plumbers merchant then I'd take the plug there and get them to find the right one.

And look up bath plug hacks for a temporary fix!

Mine split probably five or six years ago, I stretched a wide elastic band round it a few times to form a rubber seal, as a temporary measure. It worked brilliantly and is still in place today, completely forgot about replacing it since.

This looks similar to mine is it a push down one OP? We had the same issue and basically brought a £3 plug replacement (no chain) so we could bath toddler DS it was meant to be temporary but tbh it's great it's not on a chain so it can't be pulled by little hands and as it doesn't push the plug stop down when DS sits on it as he enviably does it doesn't drain the bath. I'd look at a temporary plug in the mean time OP whilst you source the seal. I attach a picture of the one we got.

Anything heavy covering the plug hole will be fine in the meantime.

LemonDrizzles · 27/07/2020 21:45

Oh my gosh, yes we already have a bigger one that could cover it! Great idea, thanks!

I used a ball of tinfoil scrunched tightly into the plug hole when mine broke. If you press it in tightly enough it should be a good temporary fix.

It appears to be a pop-up plug, where you turn a knob or press a lever to open it. If you can photograph the tap or knob, someone may recognise the brand. I mostly use Bristan, who have a very good spares service. Pop-up wastes for some reason don't fit standard bath plugs.

Some obsoleted or imported products may be difficult to match.

There is a company called Lunns who carry vast stocks of spares and may be able to match it.

I think your rubber seal is what's called a "square section "O" ring (not the common round section) and quite difficult to match.

If your existing spare plug isn't a good fit, you can order a universal bath plug made of rubber which is not very elegant but sure to work. It looks like a mushroom, not an ordinary plastic bath plug. Usually creamy-white.

However...
Pop-up wastes are notoriously liable to leak or go wrong and I no longer use them. You can get a Clacker waste which is very smart and is not prone to leak, but it will need fitting from under the bath.

We got the rubber seal for ours from wilko.
