Making space for clothes pulley

Our utility is a single story extension with a sloped roof but flat ceiling (loft space above) . Would it be possible to raise the ceiling so I could add a clothes pulley? The room gets loads of light and would be great

It would be possible, but likely to be a relatively expensive thing to do. You'd likely need to add new ties (collar ties?) if you're taking out the existing ceiling and rafters; add new plasterboard everywhere you've now exposed and re-plaster and repaint. I'm sure that would need building regs approval as it's a structural change, so you'd need to pay for that too. I guess if it's a house you're planning on staying in for a long time it may be worthwhile, but if you have to pay someone to do all the work I could imagine it costing £2k or more, but someone else may have a better idea than me.

We have a clothes pulley and I definitely recommend it, but we were lucky to have high-ish ceilings anyway!

Damn, that does sound a lot for better drying! I hadn't thought it would count as structural and applying for planning permission would really put me off.

I don't think you'd need planning permission (unless your house is listed), but just building regs, although that's a hassle in itself!

Ah, sorry I misread. But still going to add quite a lot of cost for a fairly small change to how we live. Maybe one day we'll move out of town and get both an aga and clothes pulley Smile

I have a normal height ceiling and have a pulley in my utility room. We don't have wall units so it just sits above the worktop where the sink and washing machine etc is. We don't use the area that much and it pulls up high enough to still fit laundry basket and ironed pile on the worktop.

Yes ours was above base units with a normal height ceiling too.

I have a fitted rail above base units for clothes hangers etc. I have a large towel type radiator and a tumble dryer. Works well and normal height ceilings.
