Seems sad to me, a church that was (I assume) the centre of a community for 800 years, is now available for conversion to a 3-bed home.

Someone with VERY deep pockets needed... www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-69886429.html

It's better to be converted into a house than left to crumble into nothing. Unfortunately, with dwindling numbers attending Church a lot will end up being converted.

I am yet to see a well done church conversion though.

If it was in the heart of the community, it wouldn’t be getting converted. A good way of saving a historic building.

GreyGardens88 · 27/07/2020 11:13

That's simply stunning, how much would it cost to convert that?

FadedRed · 27/07/2020 11:20

Looking at the satellite view, it’s not in the centre of any community, there are only two properties anywhere near it. It might well have been a village church many years ago, the gravestones seem to indicate people having been ‘local’ in the past.
The alternative to conversion to dwelling is that these redundant old places of worship are demolished or left to go derelict, which seems a worse ‘fate’.

Being Grade II* listed hopefully the renovations will be done sympathetically under the eye of Sauron Historic England.

I can see steel girders in one picture bracing a wall that would be about to collapse entirely. I agree OP it’s sad that these beautiful old places end of this way ( I’ve seen some hideous church conversions ) but I think in the main it’s better that they are preserved than crumble into ruins.

UncleShady · 27/07/2020 11:33

It looks like someone has started the conversion and gone bust.

I'd love it, especially the working church bells as I have two teenagers to get out of bed in the mornings. It'd cost a fortune though, anybody care to donate? Grin

It's a deserted village. There were only 10 families in the parish in 1705.

I thought that but the description says "Steel Works in place for bedroom Mezzanine with space for en-suite and office". Translation: "somebody has had a go at converting and has hit financial / building / red-tape problems. Avoid!!"

I've just shown this to musician DH.

"It'd make a great recital room, especially with those tiles" (resonance)

He does tend to think along different lines! Maybe have problems getting an audience if it's in the middle of nowhere, but hey.

Better to do something with it than let it fall down but it'll be pricey to convert into living space.
