Would you buy a house with lead paint?

Hello All,

We have fallen in love with a house and have had our offer accepted, survey completed and making good progress on buying it. HOWEVER, we have just found out from a neighbour that the windows have been painted with lead paint. We don't know whether this is just the exterior (which we are hoping), but some interior doors also look like they have the same paint and we don't know about the walls. We are going to get a surveyor out to check everything for peace of mind. Our concern is that the house is very old, a lot of flaking paint(!), and the windows would need stripping by a professional - or perhaps even replaced? We don't really have a lot of money left aside to do this. We also have a 1 year old and I expect at some point soon we would be having more children, so I am just so concerned about the risks of the lead paint to the children.

Any experiences from anyone in similar positions or advice?

Thank you!

Yes, it's likely in most pre-70s houses. You just have to make sure you wear correct PPE when you strip it.

I don’t have any experience, but absolutely wouldn’t buy a house with lead paint with a child around. There have been so many cases of lead poisoning in children (mostly in the US where lead paint is still common) from them eating flakes of paint around the house
