Does solid wood flooring have any advantages over engineered wood?

We need to replace the existing solid wood flooring in our hallway and reception rooms. We were initially keen to replace like with like and install another solid wood floor. However both of the flooring specialists we've seen so far have pushed us heavily towards engineered wood and now we wonder if we're being silly in insisting on solid!

We have brought a couple of engineered wood samples home and they do look good. We know engineered wood is easier to fit and cheaper. But other than the fact that engineered wood has a shorter lifespan as it can only be sanded a few times before the veneer wears through, are there any other reasons why we should stick with solid over engineered? Particularly interested to know if there's any visual difference at all given the veneer on top is solid wood, albeit a thin layer.

We went for solid after looking at the engineered boards: just a thin veneer of wood stuck on top of layers of what looked like cheap crap. It's so much cheaper though and it does look nice. We went for a very traditional look as our house is old. All the engineered wood I have seen in people's houses has been more modern in style so haven't been able to compare like for like.

Ours is extremely thick engineered wood. It would take 4-5 sandings and it means we can have underfloor heating. It was as expensive as solid wood. It's oiled wood so you have to be careful about dropping things that might stain but has survived 5 years and a toddler with hardly any damage. (although I'm a no shoes in the house!!)

If no underfloor heating I would probably go for solid wood but I wouldn't have oiled again unless I had a carpet on high risk areas.

Good luck and your feet will love it. Xx
