What puts you off a house?

Thought this might be if interest to anyone putting their house on the market.

I hate strong artificial smelis/ plug ins / insrmse sticks etc ( what are you trying to hide ?)
Dogs. 2 houses I viewed I spent less than 5 mins in as they had barking / in your face dogs
( Plus I was thinking of one I viewed that had a new puppy that maybe it had had "accidents' on the carpets). If you have dogs - take them.out fir the viewing ( also hide pet beds / feeding bowls ).
Houses that lacked tlc ( scuffed paintwork / dirty windows )
What puts YOU off a potential house?

Bad smells

FizzyPink · 25/07/2020 16:37

No downstairs toilet, no garden and smells

Shurl · 25/07/2020 16:38

Damp.
An uncared for house. If you haven't kept up on routine maintenance, then a week's worth of painting and cleaning won't fix it. It's obvious and makes me wonder what you are hiding. So so many houses are like this.
Radio on: I assume the sound proofing is crap

Fallulah · 25/07/2020 16:40

Tiny kitchen.
Very overlooked garden.
Trampoline, bar or anything OTT like that in next door’s garden.
Generally unkempt neighbourhood.
Ten years ago I would have said stairs in the living room but my current house has that and I knew it was the one when I walked in.

Apolloanddaphne · 25/07/2020 16:42

Front doors that open straight into the sitting room. I like a hallway.

Alloverthegrapevine · 25/07/2020 16:42

None of the cosmetic things that can easily be changed. I dont like plug ins and suspect they're making something but known that can be dealt with.

For me it will be things like, no parking, a garden that's too big or too small, a busy road or railway line, or very small rooms, especially a 3rd or 4th bedroom that is barely big enough for a bed. None of which is easy for the vendor to change and will have been reflected in the price they paid, but somehow they don't expect it to be reflected in the price they sell for

FourDecades · 25/07/2020 16:45

I too would look at neighbourhood and the actual neighbours home's.

Drive for two cars is a must

emilybrontescorsett · 25/07/2020 16:45

Lack of outdoor space. No parking.

FourDecades · 25/07/2020 16:46

Also wouldn't buy near any water, pubs, schools, shops

crimsonlake · 25/07/2020 17:07

Near a bus stop, playground, a big lampost outside, near an electric pylon. Busy road, school, no hall, tiny 3rd bedroom, galley kitchen, downstairs bathroom, no bath, near water, shops, pubs. I could go on :)

blastthepast · 25/07/2020 17:22

I always felt put off by the vendors being in when the estate agent showed us round.
The house we bought was shown by the vendor, but when they are just in the background it feels creepy

keepingbees · 25/07/2020 17:22

Only one toilet
Musty smell/damp
No parking
Too much major work
Structural issues/cracks
Fully paved or steeply sloping garden
Very overlooked
Public footpath/alley alongside the property
Converted garage
No side garden access
Being on a busy road
Stair bulkhead in the small bedroom rendering it useless as a bedroom.

romatheroamer · 25/07/2020 17:26

No bookshelves, no fitted cupboards in bedrooms. Wary if next door converted into flats.

Toastyapples · 25/07/2020 17:47

No parking. We once drove to a viewing only to discover the car wouldn't actually fit on the drive and had to pull out to park on the very narrow country road on the verge to go in for the viewing. It was one of those completely pointless viewings because it could have been Buckingham Palace inside; we were never going to buy it.

AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit · 25/07/2020 17:54

I live in a lovely little terraced house. I hope I can upgrade in a year or two, I would love detached but it's out of my league financially so I want a semi but only one that has adjoining hallways so our front rooms are further away from each other. Basically as little party walls as possible. Upon viewing I would be most put off by trampolines in the gardens, dogs... anything that indicates noise. I don't like people!

KingOfDogShite · 25/07/2020 17:57

Houses that have had all the original features ripped out.
Scruffy neighbouring houses
Small north facing gardens
Noise
Open plan
Lack of bath

MrsMoastyToasty · 25/07/2020 17:59

Houses where the vehicle access is to the rear and the road is lined with garages. They usually have a front door that opens onto a tiny front garden and a communal green that doesn't have vehicle access. It means that everyone comes into the house via the kitchen or patio doors. They seemed to be popular in the 70's.

lboogy · 25/07/2020 18:00

No Houses on the main road
Driveway is a must
Nearby amenities
Good schools
High income area

GreyGardens88 · 25/07/2020 18:03

Low or no divider between your garden and neighbours garden

Tacky Live laugh love crap around the house

Messy garden

Anything smoke stained or grubby

Built in wardrobes or shelves - just imagining the stress and cost of ripping it all out

Alloverthegrapevine · 25/07/2020 18:06

I thought that's what I wanted AWiseWomanOnceSaidFuckThisShit but found it didn't actually exist. Maybe it's different in modern semis but when we were looking we found that all the stairs/hallways were on the outside edge of the semi and the living rooms were in the centre. Logical really because it means they have one central chimney.

LightDrizzle · 25/07/2020 18:13
  • No downstairs loo
  • Fancy wall finishes or feature walls that are expensive to get rid of, like those tiles that look like layers of slate or textured plaster or wood chip on older properties
  • really tricky layouts that would be expensive to correct.
  • audible barking from neighbouring dogs
  • near neighbours with a drive or garden that looks like a dump with loads of vehicles outside. Inconsiderate neighbours are a nightmare.

I can get past dodgy decor and smells.

LightDrizzle · 25/07/2020 18:14
  • and no convenient off-road parking. A lock-up round the back doesn’t count.
OverTheRainbow88 · 25/07/2020 18:16

If neighbours house looks messy and unkept,
Small north east garden
No school catchment
Windows being open making me suspicious of hiding a damp smell
I like to see a house with the lights turned off to see the natural light

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 25/07/2020 18:23

The only things that would put me off are structural. Cracks, signs of damp, roof not complete. Anything cosmetic can be changed.

SheldonSaysSo1 · 25/07/2020 18:26

It's not an easy fix for someone just going onto the market but no bath. I wouldn't even view the property unless it was spectacular.
