Will freestanding baths and Shaker kitchens be 'so last year' next year?

There seems to be a massive craze for old-fashioned freestanding baths (the sort where you can see the legs, with a rolled edge) and 'country cottage-style' Shaker kitchens. They'd be quite appropriate for my Victorian cottage - but will they just look dated, rather than in keeping with the period, once the fashion has gone? Any alternative suggestions?

I bought one of those baths on eBay and borrowed a van to pick it up. Before I realised that there was no way it was getting up the stairs, and if it did, it would surely crash through the ceiling to downstairs.

I daresay modern reproductions aren't quite as hefty Grin.

I think the next bath tub trend will be those upright buckets that they have in Japan (I think?). They look so comforting!

Crosswithlifeatm · 25/07/2020 02:20

I can't understand the freestanding baths unless you have a cleaner, the same with glass bowls.

BitOfFun · 25/07/2020 02:29

Glass bowls, like a BATH? What a nightmare Grin.

They've been popular for decades whilst other styles have come and gone. And I've got them so they're also very stylish Smile

Whenwillthisbeover · 25/07/2020 05:46

I have had a shaker kitchen 8 years and it hasn’t dated. I don’t think shaker kitchens and Victorian type bathroom suites if a plain design will ever date in a period property of the same era.

Finfintytint · 25/07/2020 06:00

They’ve been around for ages. If you like them and they’re in keeping with the house then have them.

Northernsoullover · 25/07/2020 06:06

Shaker kitchens have been around for years..I was watching HUTH yesterday and every single renovation had a sodding grey gloss kitchen. I would prefer a shaker kitchen over any grey gloss and I think its the latter that will date more quickly.

policeandthieves · 25/07/2020 06:32

Had both nearly 30 years ago in a victorian house so quite a longstanding craze

Monty27 · 25/07/2020 06:36

If you're going to do it just do it right. You can't fit round into square bricks easily.
Don't hurry. Make thought out and educated decisions. Talking from the hard school of knocks.

Shaker kitchens have been popular since the 90s! I love them and still have one, but thought I was old fashioned, not having acres of glossy grey cupboards! Roll top baths look good in the right setting and Zi do not think of them as in or out of fashion.

daisypond · 25/07/2020 06:55

I don’t think either will ever date. They are both classic styles. They won’t ever look modern, but that’s what makes them classics.

FloreanFortescue · 25/07/2020 06:55

Definitely not. You just can't argue with classic.

Danetobe · 25/07/2020 07:06

I love those baths. I’d love one at home. I don’t think they’ll go out of fashion cos they’re a classic.

Flamingolingo · 25/07/2020 07:15

I think the painted shaker kitchen is a pretty much enduring style - the things that will date it are paint colour choices and handle style but these can be easily updated. I’ve put in two painted shaker kitchens, one in 2015 (old house), one this year (new house). Most notable difference is the paint colour and worktop choice, but that’s just the changing fashion.

Bath sanitaryware is slightly harder but I think the roll top bath is more classic than the avocado suite so will probably stand the test of time. Tile style and colour choices change more quickly though

DubaiDublin73 · 25/07/2020 07:18

Has anyone tried the Japanese baths. I'd love to

tara66 · 25/07/2020 07:36

I hate a very modern kitchen in an old house.

dalrympy · 25/07/2020 10:27

Grey gloss kitchens will date sooner I think. It's the standard go-to now

Karcheer · 25/07/2020 11:19

I put in a roll top and a shaker kitchen in 2001 in an old house. I think it’s a style that’ll be around for a while.

mencken · 25/07/2020 12:15

freestanding baths went out for a reason, stupid idea unless you have staff to clean up or loads of spare time.

shaker I believe means fairly plain - I've got a kitchen like this, just one 'frame' on each door. A lot easier than the old 'country style' wooden job, which had to go anyway as it had been installed by someone who didn't think about the old damp wall behind it. Function not form, people.

daisypond · 25/07/2020 12:59

Surely freestanding baths are easier to clean, as you can get at them from all sides. I wish I had one, but most bathrooms aren’t big enough.

I manage to clean my freestanding bath easily enough...and whilst I am replacing my shaker kitchen next year, it will be with another shaker kitchen. I have an 1835 house and it suits it well.

@Northernsoullover which programme is HUTH?

I love my freestanding bath and I don't have a cleaner Confused what am I missing??

Also have a shaker kitchen but live in an Edwardian property and anything overly modern just wouldn't look right.

Lemonylemony · 25/07/2020 14:39

Homes Under The Hammer?

Agree Shaker kitchens are not a new craze. Been popular for decades. Colours will date though - everything was grey, then navy. I think dark green next!

Annasgirl · 25/07/2020 15:42

I have had a free standing bath for 10 years - very easy to clean, suits my massive bathroom and I love it.

I also love Shaker kitchens and had on installed in previous house in 2003!!! Saw my old house for sale again recently and kitchen still looks fab (it was bought as an investment from us and vendor had not changed a thing).
