Kitchen design mistakes

We are planning our new kitchen and have a design , just talking it through with my husband and he mentioned that not having the dishwasher next to the sink may not be a good idea as you would constantly carry wet plates from the sink across to the island.

I hadn't even thought of that but can't move the dishwasher back as it would ruin the design !

Are there any other key kitchen design errors I should avoid.

Any good tips or comments on the design, I have attached the plans - dishwasher is the X and sink is along the wall

No, I wouldn’t have that, it is too awkward.

I would take the two tall units (FF/ larder) out and move everything two spaces to the left so that your run starts with the ovens. Then I would put the two tall ones back on the RHS of the run.

This would put the sink directly across from the DW. Also I like the look of units “bookended” by tall units on each end, but maybe you don’t like that look.

Chewbecca · 23/07/2020 22:06

I don’t think you have enough worktop space because of all the floor to ceiling units & would work on that.

parietal · 23/07/2020 22:06

i'd make the island bigger - you don't have much worktop space for the size of your room.

and do you have space for things like trash & recycling? And for the toaster & the kettle? those can all take up quite a bit of room, so make sure you plan for them.

Mamette · 23/07/2020 22:10

Making the island bigger is a good idea. You have a lot of space

peterpan765 · 23/07/2020 22:15

That's a good suggestion to book end using the tall units.

The island is 2.3m so that should be all our prep area.

We are having a utility room with another sink, freezer and washing machine and tumble drier. Microwave and bread maker.

My husband suggested putting the dishwasher next to the sink in the utility room ?

At the moment we are really lucky as we have so much work space and it really does all get covered in crap

The run with the cooker and sink will be 3.6 meters?

Thanks for the comments really good to get some other eyes on it. I don't want to mess up on the kitchen design !

It is a lot of space but we are extending to the side and opening the kitchen and dinning room up. It was my dream since we bought the house 14 yrs ago so I've waited a long time!!

I would want more worktop space. Where does the kettle/toaster go?

The island is lovely but you may not want to be doing all of the food prep there if people are sitting at it.

Mosaic123 · 23/07/2020 22:25

Microwave in the utility room won't get used.

NotPennysBoat · 23/07/2020 22:28

Don't put the dishwasher in the utility room, you'll be so pissed off to be carting the clean plates/pots/pans back into the main kitchen every single day!

HowFastIsTooFast · 23/07/2020 22:28

Just to answer the kettle question, get a boiler tap. My friends have one and I've never been so jealous of anything in my life Grin

Cupcakegirl13 · 23/07/2020 22:29

It’s lovely but it looks very small for the space , the island almost lends itself to being a table type seating area so you could use some more prep space in the form of work surface , also think about where your bins are going , plus what others have said about kettle and toaster .

RomaineCalm · 23/07/2020 22:29

A couple of other thoughts...

Where would you keep your plates, mugs, pans, cutlery? When you empty the dishwasher you don't want to be carrying stuff in different directions across the kitchen.

And in reverse, what happens when the dishwasher is running and there are additional dirty dishes. In our house mugs get left next to the sink to then go in the dishwasher. I would get tired of then taking them over to the island to stack the dishwasher (or having dirty mugs and spoons left on the island).

Morechocmorechoc · 23/07/2020 22:37

Agree with other posters, we had to redesign as the dishwasher had to be next to the sink and near a bin otherwise drips all over the floor and a place to the left of the sink for dirty things. I woukd have the sink where the oven is, the oven in the island as you have a big enough island and the dw to the left of the sink with the space above it for dirty plates. It works very well

Muppetry76 · 23/07/2020 22:46

Thinking very practically, you'll have to run plumbing for a dishwasher to the island - both cold water in and waste out including waste trap. If you have a solid floor that will be nigh-on impossible, an absolute ball-ache and very expensive at best. Echo pp comments about dirty pots all over rather than just by sink/dishwasher.

My microwave is in a vented cupboard as I only use it a few times a month.

Raimona · 23/07/2020 22:48

Why would you need to carry wet plates from the sink to the dishwasher?

Muppetry76 · 23/07/2020 22:50

Also, the drawer line looks ace under the sink and along to tall cupboards, but you could put drawers on the island and have full size base doors (with integrated/hidden drawers?) on the sink wall

Muppetry76 · 23/07/2020 22:55

Or...

Can you get 600mm drawers and put them on the integrated dishwasher? You'd prob need 5 units rather than the 4 you have.

If this interferes with the hob you could get that moved to the island - that way you can cook and chat to folk sitting there rather than with your back to them. I have my hob on the island (how I know about moving plumbing!) which has freed up lots of counter space on the sink wall. Plus there are some amazing island extractors - pop up or overhead!

NoNeedToArgue · 23/07/2020 22:57

Our microwave is in the utility room. We use it almost every day, especially for porridge, but it's no problem, and I'd rather not have it on a worktop!

OP I would rethink the island as food prep space. You'll want to keep it clear and won't want to be prepping food while people are sitting round it chatting!

didireallysaythat · 23/07/2020 23:04

I'd get a wall mounted microwave to go with your ovens. Make sure your bin is close to your sink and where you'll be chopping things. Hot taps are great. And we have our toaster in a cupboard. Definitely get your dishwasher withing arms reach of where your cutlery and plates go - my brother has his the other side of the island and it just feels like they have it no thooght.

minipie · 23/07/2020 23:08

I don’t rinse plates before dishwasher so not being by the sink wouldn’t be an issue. I do scrape though so the dishwasher needs to be near the bin. And near the crockery/cutlery storage.

Also echo the comments above that dirty items tend to accumulate above the dishwasher eg when it is running and you wouldn’t want that accumulation area to be on the island. But I definitely wouldn’t put the dw in the utility, that would be super annoying.

Agree with making the island bigger. Yours looks a bit stranded. It won’t accumulate less crap just because it’s smaller...

peterpan765 · 23/07/2020 23:14

Thanks for the comments

Your DH is right. I would deffo have dishwasher next to sink, easier in terms of plumbing too.

What is in the two tall units that are separate from the run of units? Perhaps if you have space you could have a double pantry unit where you can house your kettle/toaster and microwave etc.

Landlubber2019 · 23/07/2020 23:50

Our dishwasher is in the utility room, along with the bin and our washing machine! We are constantly being careful not to food food waste onto our freshly washed clothing! Would never put the dishwasher through choice

steppemum · 23/07/2020 23:51

kitchens need to be fundamentally practical.

you need worksurfaces
you need dishwasher near sink
you need micorwave accessible if you use it a lot, not in utility room
you need to thin about the fridge/oven/sink triangle for cooking
you need to think about storing chopping board and knives near your prep area, and your utensils near the hob

and so on.
Unless it is all just for show!

peterpan765 · 23/07/2020 23:51

Those two units are a pantry unit
